Band Breakup issues

Several weeks ago, I decided that I wanted to leave an originals band I've been part of for almost a year. If it makes any difference, the music was never an issue. It was the politics that bothered me.

There were several reasons, and I'll explain as per each band member.

Vocalist; Lazy - Perpetually cancelling rehearsels for crap reasons, not writing lyrics away from band rehearsel, not driving the band forward as the fronting member, not booking gigs, etc.

Drummer; Ridiculously talented to the point where he will be making a living as a session player when he is older. He lives 200 miles away so will be moving back home very shortly as his studies have finished(Very professional and helped give us our internet presence so will remain in contact)

Guitarist; Rude and egotistical. Constantly berating me for not putting work in when I'm doing the majority of it. Having been through several bands himself where other members are lazy, he has always done all the work. This band he has taken a back seat and constantly takes it out on us on the basis that he has paid his dues already with previous bands. Making this worse, he has been a long time close friend of mine which puts me in an awkward situation.

We had a permanent place of rehearsel where we paid rent every month and could come and go whenever we pleased. The guitarist decided to hand in a months notice a month ago due to the drummer moving away and him going on holiday for several weeks next month. He was still trying to book gigs months ahead eventhough we had no place fo rehearsel. I had to call him to tell him to not book anything until we found out what was going on with a rehearsel room and a replacement drummer. He then berated me for constantly bitching about politics and that he didn't want to know.

We've got one gig at the end of the week and I'm honouring that one. I've cancelled our gigs that are booked in 2 months time.

The point of this. You would think that this band breaking up would have been inevitable on the basis of the above, yet the guitarist is still acting like an idiot. He hasn't got over it.

He posted a facebook status yesterday saying "Guitarist available, call me on 07xxxxxxxxxx, please pass my details on if you know any musicians who aren't a waste of space". At our gig last weekend, he called our band as a whole "a complete joke" to a friend who had come to see us.

You would think at his age of 32, that he would be a bit more mature, dignified and professional.

Any others had problems like this with band breakups?

I would form your own band with the drummer. The guitarist and vocalist seem lazy and a waste of space. This 'paying your dues' crap is a tired excuse. A band needs to work as a unit to be good...

Thanks for the responses so far.

To be honest, I just needed to get a load off my chest.

I'm staying in contact with the drummer so that if he ever needs a bassplayer in the future, I'm good to go.

It's a little more difficult with the guitarist because he's a been a close friend for a long time. On top of that, he's a good player and is a really good writer.

I decided to cut my ties for all the obvious reasons listed in my first post, but I also need a fresh start because I've been doing stuff with covers and a previous originals with the same guitarist. The band wasn't fun anymore and I needed to cut ties to avoid completely falling out with the guitarist altogether.

I also want to play different styles and try different things anyway so I think it's the right thing to do.

Quit being a doormat, this person is not your friend. If you think this is how friends treat each other than you don't know what a friend is.

This reminds me of these abused women who say, "But he loves me and I love him." right after the guy beats the crap out of her.

Wake up, demand to be treated with respect and then you will find out who your real friends are. I can guarantee he won't make the list.

We recently lost a guitarist that had a similar personality. He's quit the band twice before (before I joined) and they let him come back both times. This time, he quit in a huff because his "stage space" had been disrespected, and he demanded that, going forward, he have a 4'X4' space on the stage that no one was allowed to enter or place any gear. He also demanded a written apology from each of us for "disrespecting his space". When we refused, he quit. The day after he quit, he deleted our entire web site, most of our Facebook page, and then filed copyright infringement claims against about 20 pictures on our Facebook page.

You're using a different aspect of the word "lost" here, I see ;) Damn, that sounds like an a***le :(

I am in a similar situation so i need advice as well.

Me and my band are recording an album. The guys me and my singer are having issues with are the second set of members. The band has officially existed since January 2011. The first set of members joined in April of 2011, then me and the singer who formed the band kicked the members out in July 2011 because they kept disrespecting us at practice, being snotty, playing musical styles that were left field (we are a rock funk band and the drummer wanted to play nu-metal) while the bass player continued to mock the very music we played. Then the levee broke when we played a show and they deliberately started to play a song we had been working on and not finished (with no lyrics so the singer had to lay on the floor and act crazy). So after that we decided to kick them out. Right before then we had been looking for band members because we had already been upset since all the bickering. New guys joined the band. We had a very successful year with basically no promotion budget. We played all the decent size venues where we live and made a presence in our scene. The drummer has a lot of connections (as do I but he knew people i didn't) and we got the opportunities that I will be forever grateful for.

Here's the dilemma, they never want to practice. Like ever. Since we have been recording (since feb) they think they are entitled not to practice, meanwhile it only took 1 month for them to finish there parts. The irony is the drummer is addicted to playing shows...he hates to say no to a booker. The problem is that we lost a lot of draw this year because we have decided to over book and play the same old sets that we had been playing last year. We use to draw 40 to 50 a show. Now we are lucky if we draw 5. They aren't interested in playing new music, covers or work on improving our online presence (interviews, live video etc) they simply think we are that good that our album is going to either skyrocket us to fame or its just something we are doing for fun. The drummer I'm closest with out of the 2 and he has a very slacker lifestyle, and the bassist lives far so it is annoying when i ask him to make practice once a week. He doesn't like jamming or writing, they both rather me and the singer show them complete songs in which they rip to shreds or don't show effort to really learn. I prefer to jam out a song, it's the most democratic process. I just dont know what to do.
