Band Communication

WhatsApp is great, you can send pictures, video, your live location, music , links , attachments, you can call like a phone and video call too.
It's encrypted when sent and deciphered by the recipients phone so I believe completely safe.
Your whole band can be in one group. So any of the group sends something and you all receive it.
Even WhatsApp itself cannot intercept and read your messages.
No, it *was* safe and secure until Zuckerberg bought it. Didn't you see the updated terms and agreements a few months ago? FB has access to everything you do in there so can aggregate with the rest of the data they keep on you to sell to their 'selected partners'. All fine if you don't mind being a monetized commodity.

Group texts or emails are the best for me. I don't think folks should have to sign up for a social media account just to communicate with the band. I refuse to use Facebook or any related product in the future, because i don't want to contribute to their success in any way if i can avoid it.

Also the Apple texting issue is super annoying. Even more annoying when those Apple users act like your Android phone is the problem and not the other way around. I don't know why people buy iPhones, they are terrible.

Unrelated rabbit trail, but when I got my first smart phone, it was iphone, blackberry, maaaaaaybe a 3rd option with a physical keyboard, or change provider.

I went with the iphone. Ticked every single box except the 'not an Apple product' box. Then I stayed through my 3g, my 4s, and my 6, because I "already had so many apps and stuff on iPhone".

When my iPhone six jumped in the lake, I moved to samsung who still had a headphone jack. I hate the curved screen with a passion, but it's better than an iPhone.

There's no way to know what I'm gonna do when my Galaxy s9 or whatever it is dies.

I've never met anyone under 60 who doesn't get their email pinging on their phone in real time... not sure about this thing about not checking emails more than once or twice a day. It's real time.

I'll be 50 in July. There's no way I would allow my email to ping me real time. It's a total time waster in my view. You must have nothing but time on your hands. If I whipped my phone out every single time I got an email (especially with two personal and one work account) I would never get ANYTHING done. Freaking Amazon, Musicians Friend Sweetwater, TalkBass, several companies dealing with another hobby, church, etc. are all hitting me up every few minutes (literally).

The same goes for texts and calls. My father and my wife have custom ring tones. Everyone else gets checked when they get checked.

I'm a time management freak. It would make my head explode to even consider taking the time to whip out my phone every single time somebody tried to reach out to me vie email, text, or call.

I literally got approval from my boss to not answer my phone every time I get a call. (Turns out, he's a huge time management guy too. He gets it.) I return calls twice a day at work. I return personal communications (and my band falls into that category) whenever I get a sec. It's usually within an hour or so. But, occasionally it isn't.

Sometimes when I do get into a group text with my band, we get all goofy. It can go on for a while. My keys player and I both participate until we have other stuff to do. Then we simply tap out and turn our ringers off. At first the rest were a little put off. But, after we explained that we simply don't have that kind of time for goof chatting, they got over it.

Not for me. I've switched off notifications and check my emails at better 1 time a day, but more often every two of three days.. I'm only following SMS and whatsapp

in fact: exactly like two fingers. i check my phone when i'm check it, and it's in silent mode the major part of the day.

I am curious how a text message from an a i-phone doesn't show on an android phone. Telephone numbers are not assigned upon the basis of whether the owner has a i-phone or an android. You could be a android owner switching to a i-phone and your cellphone number will be the same ( and vice versa). I use android and my step-daughter uses an i-phone and I get every text message she sends me. And she gets all of mine as well.
Group texts don't work well from an iPhone. Documented issue.
Has been an issue for years the messages app, like many things apple does things its own way.

Same for Instagram. I let my BL deal with feces book, IG etc.
I would not touch WhatsApp before, even less now.

Fair enough. The OP states there are 3 potential communication blocks (1 has a different OS phone, 1 won’t use FB, his texts sometimes don’t deliver consistently). The solution in my opinion is to limit the debate and someone take a leadership position and specify how the group will communicate. That’s not hostile. It’s a simple and common issue with a simple set of solutions. My first thought is pick an app. But if you ask every member to pick their favorite someone won’t like it. It’s not a problem you can “ask” your way out of. And it’s not “mean” to say how something needs to be handled. Clear expectations. I don’t see this is threatening.

There are very good reasons to refuse to use Facebook or WhatsApp. Enforcing it is a poor, uninformed decision. Band members should try to hear each other and find the least common denominator. Technical issues can be worked out.
Signal me all day long but FB? No way. It’s a well thought, moral and technical decision.

Totally fine if it's not Facebook, I don't mean that it should or should not be.
But my point is that someone has to do the short work to solve a short problem or it drags on. There are many dozens of group chat apps. It's really to have the conversation and offer ideas. But don't wait until it's a problem that causes someone to miss a gig.

Group text has the least objectionable baggage attached to it so I don't see why that can't be agreed upon. If the band members can't agree on that, it'd be a problem for me as a BL and I'd be weighing how important the objecting member is to the overall unit, especially if that person's late responses are costing the rest of the band in some way. My job as bandleader isn't to go the extra mile to accommodate unreasonable stubbornness on the part of the band members. We need to meet each other halfway.

We use texts or emails without any problems with different platforms.
I also suggest for every band I’m in to use the GMail Shared Calendar since it syncs with any calendar. All you need is a GMail account. Every time I suggest it, everyone is definitely all for it. There’s no question about the dates and times for rehearsals and booked gigs, since everyone has the same calendar events.
The main reason we use it, though, is to track when people are not available. That way, anyone trying to book a gig knows when everyone is a available.

You are using iMessage - that is the root of this issue. Apple wants the whole world to use IOS - iPhones (not iPads or Macs ) can communicate via SMS meaning even guys with Flip Phones. iMessage allows communication with all Apple devices only and is usually the default they want you to use.

Here are some help articles:

We used to have a private group on facebook that we used for band business, it worked pretty well except that one of my bandmates tended to get banned from FB on a regular basis. We moved over to an app called MeWe, and set up a new private group there. It seems to work so far. We still use text and the occasional phone call.

Back in the early days, it came down to calling everyone individually and setting up a band meeting to discuss what needed to be discussed. I don't miss those days, except for the band meetings themselves, which we would have at a local restaurant.

I'm in a bit of a quandary. My LS has an android and my drummer isn't on FB and I'm finding it hard to communicate with them all at once. For some reason group texts from my iPhone don't go out consistently when there is a non-iPhone number in the group list. I can't reach my drummer on FB Messenger because he doesn't have an account.

Has anyone else been in this particular boat? I find it hard to believe I'm the first. How did you fix it? My wife suggested WhatsApp, but I've read some bad press about security with that. Any other suggestions?

WhatsApp, Slack, Yammer....and so on.

But recognize that “band communication” is an oxymoron, like “deafening silence”.
