That was a major change in direction.
Another one that comes to mind is The Moody Blues...pre-Haywood/Lodge, they were a BLUES band.

I would say,

Rush+Paramore+Yes+Pink Floyd/2=Coheed and Cambria.


I really don't understand why you don't categorize them as virtuosos, and then go as far to call them an emo band. Listen to Here We Are Juggernaut, Far, The Broken, The Black Rainbow, and, their stereotypical song, Welcome Home.
