Band fired me now needs my help

Honestly it sounds to me like the "question" was not meant to be taken seriously:

"Could you teach somebody to play bass?"

could easily mean, "I know you're good and I want you to know that I wish you were still in our band, without sounding like I would say something like that."

I think it was a backhanded compliment and no reply is necessary, unless you want to be a good sport and show the kid a couple songs just to boost his confidence a little.
 
I agree that this is a good decision. I'd just word it a little differently. Putting the truth of the whole thing in their face seems the most honest, direct and best way to deal with it.

"Guys, you threw me out of the band. I'm still willing to play, and CAN play. I'd be happy to keep on playing bass, I'd feel taken advantage of if I were teaching this other kid how to play. Can't do that. Ill play bass with you if you like, or I'll teach him for whatever $$ an hour. It's the ony way I'd be comfortable with this."
