Band members really talented but lazy as hell

I agree somewhat...IMO I think the talent gets you notice first...but you have to follow through with the BUSINESs of show business...again that's why its easier for industry CREATED stars because the musicians will do what they need to do to get in...if means changing your personal style\look ie Lady Gaga vs Stephanie Germanotta You can see Stephanie has talent but Lady Gaga had to be created for the industry. IMHO Lady Gaga should be able to help Stephanie get her own gig.......for those that don't get what I am saying.....Stephanie IS Lady Gaga! And for those who say Lady Gaga is all media hype!...you are correct!

No matter how much talent someone may or may not have, some people don't want to "make it" in the music biz.

They have a right to do whatever they like and from the sounds of it, you are the only one in your band who wants to make something of it.

This leaves you 2 options, leave and find people to play with who want the same thing as you, or keep playing with these talented guys but have the knowledge that they are happy with where the band (and themselves) are in the musical life.


I was in a band with some guys who weren't the greatest musicians, but had some fairly decent songwriting talent. Always wanting to play gigs and stuff like that, but no one else ever wanted to do any of the dirty work that came with organising other bands and venues. I was stuck with it the entire time we were together (over 5 years). Then the singer got married and had a kid and from then on it was downhill. The guitarist started having other things on, and after a while I just got over organising rehearsals for people to cancel 2 or 3 days before, so I stopped. After about 2 months the drummer asked when we were jamming next. I said, ask the others as I am always up for it. Nothing happened.

That was 2 years ago.

I can feel ya pain and been in that kinda rut b4, so I wont go on a long_ass replay of your pain.

Just one thing though.....how can your nerves handle having a 44 oz softdrink sitting so close to your console? One bump of the drink and flash, pop, snap and puff o silicon smoke. Dang man, please move that drink.:eek:

I put the drink there for the sole purpose to see if anyone would make a comment....you win!...to stop you from having the "flashback willies" .... I don't normally allow drinks near the board!

to be honest, if you set the deadline, they agree then back out, and you let them slide, that's also you not keeping your word.
Set the deadline, tell them what's at stake, then do what you gotta do!

Some people tend to get away with as much as other people let them. Funny how that works. In this case I might (heavy emphasis on "might") continue to play with them, not mention anything about recording, maybe find some other outlet for that. Having dealt with people like this one time too many, I can practically guarantee that if you kept trying to get them to do what they obviously couldn't care less about, you'll eventually come to the realization that it was a gigantic waste of time.

Your time. And you'll kick yourself. Hard.

been there. my last band consisted of 2 singer/guitarists. one was constantly progressing in all aspects. the other refused to practice and has been in a rut since he was about 16. we had a drummer that used to get in a lot of trouble.. mostly with his mom and get himself locked in the house and we couldnt practice or get anything done. he got 4 strikes and even though it was the hardest thing we ever had to do, we got rid of him.

got the new drummer.. the best in town. easily one of the best ive ever heard. turns the heads of many drum veterans. he once said "yea.. modern rock.. im over it. i got bored with Rush when i was a kid."

so ability bred ego. in the end, i was removed from the band for "hindering progress and being a source of negative energy". im a motivator. if you wont move, ill push you. they deemed this me being a jerk, ironically to MAKE progress, not hinder it.

so i moved on, found a band of people that care, and we've made more progress in the last year than the last band did in 3. they dont need to be pushed. they dont groan when i say we should pass out fliers. arguments are over the creative direction of music, and are normally short and productive.

the last band.. well they got 5 crappy demos done and after a year, started playing gigs again with a pathetic excuse for a bassist. id say getting thrown out of there was the best thing that ever happened to me.

if they wont move, dont waste your time. enthusiasm and work ethic > talent. the bassist in my band is the perfect example. hes a passable bassist, one hell of a screamer, and the heart of the band no matter what. wouldnt trade him for geddy lee and 10 million dollars.
