band practice... in an apartment??

I absolutely agree with what you're saying about playing live but the original poster was looking for a solution to practicing in an apartment. What I've suggested does give you an ideal "spoon-fed" mix but his only other alternative is to not practice at all. In a live situation you always have to adapt to the conditions but this is about practice. In this case the headphones are the FOH so having them sound good is the way you want it.
Agreed.

I was just explaining the downside of using headphones. However, I'd definitely do the headphone rehearsal thing again if I could... just keeping in mind no solution is perfect.

Move to the apt but keep your practice space at home. Drums in an apartment = you in the street. Sorry!

I once had a neighbor complain when I played my acoustic guitar in my apartment.

I tried a full-band rehearsal in the basement of a duplex I lived in. My side was walled off from the neighbor's side. Neighbor said it sounded like we were in his living room.

It's probably not a good idea.
