Bandmate demanding you play after surgery

Unless I read something wrong, Friday is a recording session. Unless you are all being recorded live with only one or two takes, I'm betting you should be able to do it.

No idiot should DEMAND you do it, but even with the side effects you described you should be okay for a recording session.

If you don't know the song by now, and you need to learn and rehearse it this week before recording, you shouldn't be recording it anyway. As long as you know the song, you will get a run through or two before you record for score anyway. And, of course, thanks to the miracle of patching and overdubbing, you can fix things with minimal effort after you got the basic line in the machine and everyone is overall happy with the take.

I have had to record when I have been sick a ton of times, because the studio was booked weeks in advance and you couldn't cancel, and because I have been paid premiums for some sessions and I"m at the mercy of the person paying me. I've only really screwed up once or twice in thirty years that way.

I have never recorded personal or band material in a real studio unless I knew the stuff cold beforehand, since I'm paying for it and I want the minimum cost. Your band I hope is the same.

Either way, good luck with losing more "wisdom" ;) and let us know how it goes.

He's definitely being unreasonable by demanding you play. Playing is doable after you get your wisdom teeth out but you'll probably be pretty doped and it's hard to keep consistency of tone, time, feel, etc. when you're relatively strung out but if you feel up to it I'd definitely give it a shot.

If he said he'd appreciate it if you could at least try to make it, and you told him you would do your best, that's one thing.

I'm not big on the whole "demanding" thing. Personally I would probably say, very sternly, "I will see how I feel." While staring a hole in his head.

Of course, I would always do my best to make a session or a gig, pain or no pain.

Having had an emergency wisdom tooth surgery, I'd say its not a big deal. Today is Monday, and you have until Friday. You might be out of comission today, but by tomorrow you should be up and running. Are you just having 1 wisdom tooth out, or all 4? Ive had 2 of mine pulled. The first one bled for a couple hours, but didnt hurt too bad. The second bled for about 45 minutes, and didnt hurt. I didnt take any pain meds for either one.

Some people are different though, so you never know. Tell him you'll keep him notified of your condition and you'll practice as soon as you are able.

Your dentist sucks! The first wisdom tooth I had out was similar to this. Doctor did it with a pair of pliers. Grab tooth, bend this way *CRACK*, bend this way *CRACK* and out we go. That one bled for about 5 hours and hurt a little afterwards.

The second time, an oral surgeon did the job. With some ice pick looking tool he got under the tooth and slowly pried it out of place. He took it out and I didnt even know he was finished.

+1 This hits it on the head.

I know people that have recovered in two days, but all 4 of my wisdom teeth were impacted when I had them removed right after highschool. That means that they were sideways and underneath the gum - not even poking through. That's a major surgery.

Took me weeks to recover. I didnt eat solid food for weeks, and when I did, everything tasted like crap. Definitely wasn't playing any music at the time either...that was the last thing on my drugged up brain.

i had the same issue last summer. I protested that we didn't do this "favor" to a friend who was leaving for a few months and play a going away party 5 days after my surgery. I only sing meager backups, but i was told not to do that for at least 2-3 weeks due to the severity of the removal. After some arguing the bandleader insisted we play the show, i said i was not going to sing. Had i grown a pair i would've said no way to even playing the show because i was in serious pain for 2 days after the gig.

Update: this removal was ten times worse than the last. As of now, it hasn't stopped bleeding since this morning, the drugs have done nothing for my pain, and I've vomited twice which hurts like a ***** when it hits the bleeding area. Seeing as how I was out for five days lat time, it's not looking good.

Brother, do what you gotta do to take care of yourself. 10 years from now, worrying about this will seem silly. Your bandmate is less than the best. Don't fret him, and take care of yourself first.

man, that sucks, bleeding is normal but drugs doing nothing is strange you may need higher dosis, I hope you are doing better soon.

Too many people in this thread copped the attitude that: "it was easy for me, therefore, it will be easy for you, wimp."

It doesn't work that way. There are easy teeth pulls, and there are teeth pulls that will knock you on your ass as much as any major surgery.

Brother, take your time and get well.

Yeah, I was fine and ready to go fairly quickly minus the puffy cheeks and all. My sister, however, had to go to the emergency room a day or two after the operation because of some pretty severe bleeding. FWIW, it was the same doctor.

FWIW, I wrote one of the songs for our new CD the night I had my wisdom teeth out. It came out pretty well - very Cameo-esque.
Sometimes pain+drugs=Inspiration.

When I had mine pulled, I had to have 5 removed cause I had a surprise tooth under my other ones. They put me to sleep to do the surgery. I woke up in pain and delirious. My mouth swelled up to about twice its size and I looked like I had stuffed my mouth with cotton balls (which is exactly what I had done to keep the blood out of my stomach). They gave me percocet. I went to school but I was pretty screwed up all the time for about a week.

For me, I cant imagine playing in that condition.
