Tomorrow I have to have an emergency procedure to remove my wisdom teeth. Recording was supposed to happen Friday, but I can't practice. How would you respond if you were in this situation, a bandmate responded by demanding you practice after this kind of procedure.

You'll be doped up on pain meds, and probably won't be able to drive anyway. But see how you feel. If you're up to it, great. If not, tell him to go front himself.

Fire him. Seriously, anyone who is incapable of understanding the situation is not worth playing with. I had all mine taken out at once, and it's not fun. You've got big gaping holes in your mouth packed with bloody gauze. You're not going to want to do much of anything for a few days, and I'm sure doing things like lifting amps would not be recommended by your dentist.
I would tell him you will try but you are going to use reasonable judgement. If you are in no condition then dont't go. Oh well, you tried.

Are you getting your wisdom teeth out on Monday? By later Tuesday and into Wednesday you should be fine granted you do not go to a butcher to do the procedure. If the surgery is worse than what I referring too, you just need to tell your band mate what the doctor is telling you. If he does not listen, get the heck out of the band or fire him. Complete BS if he is trying to get you to record when you are screwed on drugs and/or in severe pain.
Depends if he's ok with anesthesia. Getting my wisdom teeth removed was the first time I've ever been put under and I found out that it really makes me quite nauseous, as in I spent the next 36 hours next to a toilet. But I've also known people who got their teeth removed then went to work/school the next day so it depends.
if surgery is Monday then you should be ready for work by Wednesday, Friday you can have a beer. Wisdom teeth removal are not bad, they just cut a little and pull the theeth. You may want to stay Monday and Tuesday at home since you will be spitting blood as hell.
Last time I got them out, I was out for a week. My wounds didn't heal for five days and I was coughing up blood. I'll skip the details, but if it's anything like last time, I'm out. And before anyone says it, rescheduling is not an option, it's an emergency procedure.

Not much to add, but I once did a gig a couple weeks before a hernia surgery. One of the most painful evenings of my life.
I'd still go play and record - but maybe that's just me. I hope it all works out good for you.
Um...if I couldn't do it, I tell them I couldn't do it. If I could do it, I'd say ok. That's just me though.

I had surgury on my index finger a few years back after a work accident. It was nasty, my finger was the size of a sausage, completely dark purple, and I had seven stitches in it (on the palm side). My band leader got pissed at me because I wouldn't do a gig on Congas that same saturday! What a prick! So I feel you, but.......
Getting your wisdom teeth out is no big deal, I had my top ones removed about fifteen years ago and did a gig the next night. Had my bottom ones removed seven years ago and could have played the same night. It's not that big of a deal.

It took me longer than a day or two to recover from my procedure. More like four or five.
Hmmm...that was pretty much a prerequisite for a handful of artists back in the 60's and 70's.
Bottom line: you don't have a clue as to how you'll respond following the procedure. You may be chirpy as a chipmunk or driving the porcelain bus. Either way, tell the guy to pound sand. FWIW, I'm gonna guess that this type of behavior (on his part) is nothing new. Another tip: don't chew Vicodin.

Tell the A-hole no. If he has a problem with that, let it be that. His problem. You are having surgery. This is an excused absence. If he raises a ruckus beyond that, let him. You are clearly in the right here. The more people he complains about this to, the more he will be cutting his own throat by looking unreasonable. Give him some rope. He'll hang himself.
