Audition the guy for both guitar and bass. Let him play the one he's best at and you play the other one.

Bandmix ad question

When I was running my IT business, our rule of thumb when hiring was: "Hire the person, not the position."
I was never concerned too much about "correctness." Or showing the colors or having the right totem symbols tattooed on your forehead. I was only interest in three things: is the person (a) qualified for the job, (b) reliable, and (c) trustworthy.
If a guy plays bass and guitar and I'm hiring a bass player, I don't really care - as long as he can play bass.
@lfmn16 - you've been around. Go with your gut. It shouldn't take you more than a 5 minute phone call to get a good sense of who you're dealing with, regardless of what instrument they're posing with.

Depends. Bandmix let's you check as many boxes as you want - that's why you see ads looking for tenor voice, Alto voice, guitar, bassoon, etc. I would just ask them which is their primary instrument.
Above all else avoid guys that wear berets.
Fedoras have become the true deal-breaker for me.

You know, I've always considered myself a musician that plays bass. I also can play brass instruments, and guitars. To me, a true musician given enough time should be able to get music out of most instruments.
I would just ask for a bass duty link or an mp3 or even for them to play a little bass for you on the phone. Tell them it saves gas and have fun with it. Don't worry too much about a picture of a guitar...

I've always been under the impression that any guitarist could theoretically "play bass" but only those of us who are dedicated to making the bass guitar our primary instrument are "bassists". Just because someone may have the baseline level of skill to play a song on more than one instrument does not mean that they are a master of each of those instruments.
Thus, if a profile primarily shows a dude playing guitar in his photos and videos but he also lists that he plays bass, I'd be forced to assume that he COULD play bass but is really/primarily a guitarist. The same way that when anyone asks me if I play guitar, I tell them "I can, but it would take a while for me to practice until I'm good enough to be boo'd offstage".

Any serious candidate will have an audio or video sample of their work in the profile. It's simple enough to do.
Ask the guy if he plays lead guitar. If he says "yes", then pass, lol. I spent many years on bass. Switched to rhythm guitar for many more years, then back to bass. Two things.... I can't play lead worth a crap and a lot of my recent pics will show me on guitar.

I know a few of guitarists who can "play bass" but have yet to hear one lay down a proper bassline, they all just play guitar lines an octave down.
It's requires a completely different mindset and few who started on guitar can make the transition.
