Bands - - - PerformanceTurn-Offs

I use work them for a good bit just cause I dig in hard when I use a pick and I don't want to bust a new string. But adequate stretching of strings usually helps them stay in tune pretty well so maybe that is a problem for some people who put new ones on right before a show.

I try to avoid putting new ones on before a show. Usually 1 or 2 practices before. But back on topic. I agree with a band that doesn't have any energy. If they look bored il get bored. May not leave but il focus more on drinking and hanging out than paying attention. Which I guess may work for the bars advantage lol. That and sounding like crap. I can handle loud or whatever but a really bad mix and/or offensive frequencies are a turn off.

"Frontperson who spews out streams of profanity just because they think it's cool, in reality, it comes off as stupid, lame and amateurish"

"bands that swear and use profanity just for the sake of using it, or adding it into a cover song when it wasn't there originally"

Yep. I'm no prude, and can blue streak like any red blooded male, but I hate that stuff. Like some screeching singer..."AAAAAALLLLLL RRRRIGHTTTTT!!! WE HAVIN A GOOD TIME MUTHA FU-KASSSSSS? WE GONNA ROCK THIS B-TCH TONITE!!!"

I'm out the door.

The barefoot thing? I get it...ok, you're a hippie(wannabe) and you love Phish.

I guess there's a first time for everything though...two weekends ago we played at one of the bars that was on a pub crawl route, had a great time. The suburb had trolleys circulating from bar to bar to bar on the hour. Different crowd every hour. It was during that midwest heatwave...hotter than poop. It was still around 90 at night, and I...for the first time ever...wore shorts (cargo shorts, not those Lt Dangle type shorts), a Hawaiian shirt and flip flops.

Felt like I was in Jimmy Buffet's band.

Eddie Vedder annoys the sh-t out of me just because he's Eddie Vedder.

And, because of him there's a whole generation of self important over serious singers with no tone or vocal range.

Plus, he's a Cub fan. So he REALLY sucks.

Guitarists using capos. Their reasoning
is that certain songs sound better with
them playing open strings. But is it really
because they're uncomfortable playing in
certain keys? As a bassist, my job is to
make every song sound good, no matter
what key it's in, without a capo. Ever seen
a bassist putting on a capo because the
song sounds better with open bass strings?

What I hate most about capos is that they enable marginally capable singer/guitarists to change the key of a song at will. I've done enough praise and worship songs in wack keys like Bb and G# to have developed quite a dislike for 'em.

If you change the key of a song, you change the song. Especially covers. If you can't sing or play it in its original key, don't do the song.

What kind of peavey amp do you own? I always thought that the peavey tour amps sounded pretty cool. the graphic eq on those amps kind of reminds me of the hartke ha3500 bass amp.

I got the Tour TNT 115 back in April. It sounds great in pretty much any setting!

Man, I never knew rock and roll became so conformist.

Im with ya, man!
I wonder if its a matter of musicians/performers way over-analyzing others based on their own insecurities.

The only thing that truly turns me off of another band is if their music isnt any good. Even then, if theyre tight, I'll acknowledge that and consider that Im probably not a big fan of their genre.

If you can't sing or play it in its original key, don't do the song.

I disagree. Sometimes hearing a song in another key can make it sound better, sometimes worse. It depends.
A friend of mine performs her own versions of some cover songs, adjusting keys to suit her voice, and makes slight changes to the arrangements. Most of her covers are quite beautiful.

I agree. How many times are you listening to the radio and the first chord hits and you instantly recognize the song? I hate changing keys of covers. (I understand the reasons why people do it, no need for the obligatory talk bass lecture)

+1 There is a program called Vinyl Tap and they did a segment where they played the first note of well know songs and you had to guess the song. I impressed the wife by getting all the songs right. And yet in the band, we quite often jump straight into songs and I cannot tell the song until the vocals start :(

my turnoff is a band that isnot having fun on stage. If they dont enjoy what they are doing I wont either. also bands that try too hard. if they would just relax and enjoy themselves I would enjoy the show too.

Sometimes I become really self conscious of this while playing - especially if it is a rather difficult song or passage and I have to really concentrate.

[think,playing,think,playing.. uh oh.. I should smile or look up or they'll think I'm not having a good time.. uh oh, if I think about this more I'll f up.. dangit, flubbed that.. grrr.. SMILE]
