Bands that sound like Primus

I know I've gone on about this band for ages, but Claypool fans should check out a British band from the '70s called Back Door. The format was bass/drums/sax, and they sound like Ornette Coleman meets Robert Johnson meets Monty Python!

Back Door's bassist/co-leader was Colin Hodgkinson. Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool and Flea all show his influence in their playing. (Colin showed Stanley how to slap the electric bass in 1972 when Back Door supported Return To Forever.)

Two of their albums were reissued on CD last year. They might be difficult to find in US stores, but both are available as imports through CDnow and Amazon. Go for the self-titled 'Back Door' first, and then progress to '8th Street Nites', which is a bit more bluesy, but has some great bass/vocal solo pieces.

The only band that i've heard of (and I own some of their records) that sound like Primus are an Australian band called Cartoon, they are very good even if they aren't original...
p.s. if you are non-aussie getting their recrods may prove to be a very big challenge indeed, tell me how you go..

Man I love Cartoon. Ive got the Annexe EP but cant find Ovine Bovine anywhere. Did they release any other stuff before they broke up?

LOL I was just about to say the same thing. But what the hell...

Umm...I really can't think of any that sound like Primus besides Buckethead, Oysterhead, Les Claypool, the Flying Frog Brigade, and I dunno...anything involving Claypool or musicians that he has worked with.



Have you heard of a band called FreekBass? They are like primus and p-funk.

And Freekbass is from Cincinnati! I worked with the keyboardist's neighbor...yeah I know, who wants my autograph?

Les often cites the band XTC as a big influence. They were a British 80s band with some pretty good tunes. I wouldn't go as far as to say they sound alike but give them a try. Also, 80s-era King Crimson (Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair) would probably most accurately portray the Primus sound, although it's more technical than heavy. Les covers a few KC songs with his side projects (notably Thela Hun Ginjeet, from Discipline).

The Residents are another band that have a weirdness to them, not unlike Primus. Primus has actually covered a few of their songs as well (Hello Skinny and Constantinople).

If only there was a way to combine XTC, King Crimson, The Residents, and old Incubus. That's the Primus weird-thrash sound right there. :D
