Bands that sound like Primus

Check out Bluchunks. They were coming up on the Bay Area scene about the same time as Primus, and the two bands have VERY similar sounds...

Well, hopefully somebody has already pointed out that there is no band that sounds like Primus.
I know that for many many years, if I played a CD on my computer it would always tell me the name of the band, the album, and the genre.... except Primus... Primus was THE ONLY band that would come up: Genre = Primus
I always thought that pretty much said it all. (I think it was Windows media player - somebody help me, somebody knows...)
ANYWAY - My opinion... Primus fans who are in need of new music usually enjoy Frank Zappa. If you haven't yet checked out Zappa, I'd recommend that. Not because anything directly reminds me of Primus - just a similar blend of music and wackiness maybe...

There is a band out of Cali that I came across on MySpace called Fossil Face. They are pretty close to Primus with the quirkiness and bad-assery.
There was a band circa 1986-88 called STUMP (half Irish /half English if I recall) and they were very much a proto Primus type band (or that Primus were very much a proto Stump type Band). The key thing was a love for Captain Beefheart music and of course a decent bassist. I have been aware of them since the mid 80`s (the last time I saw them play live on TV) and from the moment I first heard Primus I thought...STUMP! Stump`s music and lyrics were very similar to Primus in that there was a strange unworldly, and yet weirdly mundane aspect to it. Songs about Tupperware parties, fish`n chips etc..
Very hard to find though...they had a mini album out in `86 (I think called "Quirk Out") followed by a relatively obscure full album in `88. These guys didn`t sound a `little bit` like Primus, we are talking...A LOT like Primus. Though really it should be Primus sound A LOT like STUMP! Primus aren`t the original band they are made out to be. When I first heard Primus I had a strange sense of deja vu...I thank STUMP for that.

There was a point that one of my bands was doing really well over here in Britain, and we were touted as "the British Primus" by some well know mags, and radio stations...
I never believed that, though.
I love primus. I'd never reach that level of greatness.

No one creates the magic that happens with Les & Larry, not Buckethead and not the Phish guy.
They are so much stronger as Primus, there will never be another, but influences are scattered about.

Primus has put out some really great songs.... the tommy the cat lick is freaking amazing!!....hamburger train is one of my all time favorites as well....

I'm of the firm and cemented opinion that if a person doesn't like Primus than their musical tastes haven't matured yet. They suck almost as much as Primus does.
