Banishing Fender CS tort

How about a deep brown tort which has close color tone to rosewood fretboard , but may look pretty a like Pino Sig P.
With black pickguard, she look no different to Nate Mendel Sig P from distance.

Maybe a spitfire pickguard could shine her up.....

Torts come in batches. Like clown vomit... it's not a set pattern or cookie cutter...the outcome is driven purely by the nature of mixology.

I've seen some torts that are quite nice and others with that yuck quality goin' on.

Tort scratch plates are inanimate, unlike cats... I've known some outright fugly cats who have the sweetest dispositions and they'll probably grow on you... but in any inanimate object like a tort scratch plate is just going to be fugly... but perhaps someday you'll come across a tort scratch plate that is actually kind of cool and that's the difference.

By the way to the OP... black is not a color it's the absence of color.

I don't like white, aged white pearloid is okay. I like clown vomit but the "new" clown vomit is like bad tort some are better than others.
I have noticed that the "new" clown vomit offerings from various makers is not like the old stuff which was more vibrant and colorful. Now it looks like cheap offensive Chinese knockoff PVC blah...

I like some tort, but your black is a marked improvement.

Look at the old Tort pg's and notice they have a reddish hue to them.

Look at the modern ones and they are brown.

If FCS is making replicas, why can't they make the pg's.

Am I the only one who notices that?

Spitfire has some Tort that looks close to vintage but they are pricey.

Here's my Jazz Bass with an aftermarket pg and I think it looks better than the CS.
Also notice the perfect fit at the control plate!

What do you think?

To me, tort looks like someone ate way too much steak tartar with raw egg yellow and then chucked it back up on a glass table top.

I finally, finally got round to swapping out the 'corned beef' tort on my CS Precision. Knocked the gloss off a black WD Music pickguard - and I think it looks a whole lot better. I did the same on my CS Jazz. I love the basses themselves, but oof, Fender's relic tort is grim to my eyes. What do you reckon?

I 100% agree with you! The black pickguard on your red P Bass looks beautiful! I would have also chose white, white pearloid, mint green, or anodized gold for your P bass. The matte black pickguard gives a nice dimension to your Jazz Bass. It works well with the black finish and rosewood fretboard.

This should be the official theme song of the tort pickguard. It even has a nice bass line!

There are instances of FCS master-builder guitars and basses that Vincent van Trigt built with Spitfire guards.

These were so much less expensive.

Yeah, that tort is a rort. One of those Spitfire guards would be better.
I actually dig the tort Fender used in the 90s. It ain’t pure vintage, but it’s nice.

I agree, I love CS basses and I own four of them, but the torts are horrendous. Also the proud posters before me: sorry guys, they look nothing like a real nitro guard.

Replacing mine with Lava, Spitfire or Avantguard so they can stand proudly next to my pre CBS basses. Still on the fence which one to choose.

I'm stayin out of this. Learned my lesson the hard way on here. Thread was pulled eventually but not before I had piqued the ire of half the world's tort loving bassists.

I’m fond of basic black single ply Bakelite. I WASN’T fond of the tort the CS ‘64 Jazz came with (it was an “off the shelf” discount purchase, not a custom order)…swapped it over immediately.

It may not be traditional, but I’m happier. And anyway, they had black pickguards on the slab Fender precisions in the 60’s, so why not?
