The old tort pickguards actually are an eyesore. I dig the flat black look on the new ones.

The weird thing - and maybe it's just because I don't have the basses in front of me to compare - but I feel like my Squier Classic Vibes have better tort guards stock than the Custom Shop axe did!

Look at the old Tort pg's and notice they have a reddish hue to them.

Spitfire has some Tort that looks close to vintage but they are pricey.

Here's my Jazz Bass with an aftermarket pg and I think it looks better than the CS.
Also notice the perfect fit at the control plate!

I really like tort when there are a few spots with same color as the body which is the case here with the two sunburst basses.

Looks like Squier tort. Can’t believe that’s from the CS. The tort they use on the American standard/pro is much better.

I’m fond of basic black single ply Bakelite. I WASN’T fond of the tort the CS ‘64 Jazz came with (it was an “off the shelf” discount purchase, not a custom order)…swapped it over immediately.

It may not be traditional, but I’m happier. And anyway, they had black pickguards on the slab Fender precisions in the 60’s, so why not?

And agree 100%, the black pickguard on that blue jazz bass is PERFECT !!!!!!

Candy Apple Red was a custom colour and thus it got a white pickguard that turned green because of cellulosic material. You need a mint green pg!

tort or nothing. i have two basses with rear routes but when I had a black jazz and black p bass, both had red tort.

I finally, finally got round to swapping out the 'corned beef' tort on my CS Precision. Knocked the gloss off a black WD Music pickguard - and I think it looks a whole lot better. I did the same on my CS Jazz. I love the basses themselves, but oof, Fender's relic tort is grim to my eyes. What do you reckon?

I dug the tort on the Jazz. Looks a lot like my old CS Precision. Heavy relic black with rosewood and a dart tort (more brown than red) guard. But I don’t like the really bright reddish tort.

For the CAR Pbass, I'll take the tort guard all day long. The black is just...meh.

For the J, I wouldn't own a black one, especially with a matching headstock. It has no pizzazz, IMHO. You asked...
