I am working on a narrow 5 string 17mm string to string. Will Bart 57CBJD pickups work I have used them before for wide spacing with no problems. Are they bar magnets or pole? Anybody tried this before? I am contacting bart but who knows how long they will take to get back to me....t

I got this from best bass gear. Good people.

"Hi Tom,

The Barts are bar magnets. Minimum spacing over the pickups is 64mm for those. Be sure to check your total spacing over the pickups themselves."

If they are bars. Why would there be a minium spacing?

You don't want the outer strings to be too close to the ends of the bars, you'll lose output from those strings.

You really want them to be comfortably inside the "aperture" of the magnetic field created by the bars, where the magnetic field lines are mostly flat. The field lines start to curve toward the ends of the bars, and a string located there will not produce as much current in the pickup coil.
