Double Bass Bartlett Audio Bass Microphone

I've just received my Bartlett and given it a quick test alongside my usual Full Circle and Line Audio CM4 setup. I can't see it replacing the CM4 under the bridge as my favourite for when I'm isolated, but sitting in the F-hole it's EQ really works well to bring in the 'air' and top end that the CM4 cannot in the same position, without letting in too much of the outside world. On first impressions i think the Bartlett and Full Circle will be a really complimentary, easy to work with live setup, and I'm really looking forward to testing this out!

I'm on IEMs most of the time but our bandleader loves a very loud wedge which really limits my possibilities. I wish we were all on ears!
How is the Bartlett working out in live settings blended with your Full Circle?

So far really nicely... I've just been experimenting with it in my IEMs on a few gigs, at around 3/4 the volume of the pickup it adds some life and air to the sound and everything feels a little more lively. I believe around the same is now being used in the FOH. I'm liking it centred in the bass side F-Hole actually, with a bit of bottom rolled off. Getting the two in phase is key!

It sounds really interesting. I’d like to use it in much the same manner to add some body to my amplified sound. I use a Vic’s Model C piezo pickup into an AI Clarus 2R Series 4 two channel amp with phantom power. I’ve played around with mixing a mic with it before but had too much bleed with other mics. This sounds like it’s just what I need.

Great! What's the lineup/stage volume like? There's certainly bleed but it's far reduced from the other options I have been trying. I do work in a really loud environment though!
Guitarist/vocalist with Gretsch guitar through a Fender Blues DeVille; loud drummer and me through the Clarus/DoubleShot. We run our own sound for smaller gigs and the larger clubs have a sound man and house system. We play way quieter now than 20 years ago so there is much less bleed than I would have experienced back then.

Are any of you guys using the Bartlett for gigging into an amp? If you are, can you show some pictures of the mounting and cabling please?

I have two rigs now, one for a mic and one for loud gigs. I went back to the electret condenser in the f-hole for my small rig. It's an inexpensive AT model, on par with the radio shack mic of fame here. If there is a better option out there, I'd be interested.

My current setup uses one of those flexible ties form the hardware store as the mic mount, tied to a bridge foot. It allows me to route the small cable and everything down to my tail. The mic has it's own little supply that battery powered. I replaced the 3.5mm with a 1/4".

OK so I sprung for one. Couldn't help myself. I'm running the Bartlett straight into my little Peavey 208 (via a phantom supply box).

I played my first gig with it last night in a small, crowded bar room. The band is a three piece acoustic, jug band jazz group. I typically use an amp, while the other two PA their instruments and vocals. The bar had a tiny PA for that.

The Bartlett performed well. It's early, but I do feel that it has a better feedback vs gain ratio than the other electrets I've tried (and I've tried a bunch). I did not have to push it much last night, but that's the point. There is a lot of OOMPH as one would expect from an F-hole mount. I EQ'd out some bass, and in some mids as the night went on. I think some of that is a function of the amp I am using. My gut tells me that this mic would shine with some of the cleaner, hi end stuff on the market.

I plan on using this setup for that scenario for the foreseeable future. I'll report back as I get more time with it.

Initial impressions - it's a quality product that does what it's expected to do. A good option for low volume amplified gigs.

Just bought one of these. Very excited to give it a try both by itself and blended with the Lifeline.

I have a few preamp options:
1) Straight into my AI Clarus 2-channel head.
2) Blended with the pickup into Headway 2-channel preamp.
3) Blended with the pickup into my old Fishman Pocket Blender.

Tried a couple other low-cost options; Crown GLM (back in the day), Golden Bullet (from Gollihur), and the Prodipe (cheap DPA knock-off). Not a one of ‘em was usable.

I’ll be extremely happy if it’s even moderately better.

I use the pad adapter at -20db and it works great. I have a 1 ft XLR that I plugged into the FELiX then the adapter then the mic. I think there’s an internal dip switch on the mic input but I don’t remember if it’s a pad or gain…
This is a big help. Bought the Bartlett recently and discovered, as I’m sure you did, that when placed in the f-hole it clips the amp (I’m using the Clarus as well). Been having some success with the mic placed between two strings below the bridge but then the issue of bleed from other instruments & feedback came into play.

Bought an attenuator adapter (haven’t tried it yet) and was concerned as well about it jutting out from the amp input. Your extension cable idea will solve that and also give me a little more flexibility on where I can stand in relation to the amp…thanks! Now I can try mounting the mic in the f-hole, achieve some isolation from the other instruments, and maybe solve the feedback/bleed issues.

Also realized after reading through this thread that I have to rethink the way I’m blending with the pickup. Was trying to go with mostly mic and a little pickup to fill it out (using one of the little Headway 2ch preamps). You can imagine that it didn’t get me very far once things started cooking. I’m going to try mostly PU and blend in the mic to add some air & wood and all the good stuff we want to hear.

TalkBass can be such a great resource.
