I agree, to a point. Strong and wrong is better than timid,,,any day.
Though in most cases I'm backing someone, often a guitar/front guy. It's my job to make them sound good. So I need to know the cliché's and to be able to predict what they'll do. If I get it wrong I need to know what they'll do the second time.
Again though... it's the pianist. (if there is one)That's where the rub is most likely and often is the person who actually knows what going on.
