Basic Re-string Question

Here is a string 101 question.

I restrung my PBass last night with Nickel Lo-riders. I've been a guitar player for 20 years, but I am new to bass and this was my first bass restring.

I left too much string length on the low E string so it wrapped around so many times that the final wrap is wrapped on top of the wrap before it, so the string does not go perfectly straight into the nut. It kind of sticks out closer to the A string up at the tuner and then goes into the nut, if that makes any sense with out a picture.

So far after 1 day the guitar is still in tune and plays well...but should I try to restring this one string, will it cause any problems since it is going into the nut at a slight angle? Would unwinding this string, cutting it shorter and restringing it be an option, or would I need to get a new string?

Thanks for help with my silly question :hmm:

It is best if you have as many wraps as possible around the tuner to get the string to set as close to the head as possible. Cut off about an inch or so, what ever you think is the amount of string that is wound on top of the other string. Then restring it to check if you have the right length. Better to be too long than too short, string stretchers are expensive!!

OK thanks for the feedback! I wasn't sure if unwinding it, cutting, and rewinding would be feasible...since it's such a thick string I didn't know if it would be too "coiled up" already to make that work.
