bass amp (head) problem?

i have a yorkville head and yorkville cabinet. the head is a 400watt, and the cabinet is a 410 cabinet (i think 500watt).

now to the question. The amp doesnt seem to be pumping itself to its max level. i could be wrong or have some setting that are making it quieter than it should be, but i have a reason to believe that my head is only powering one side of the cabinet.

i plugged my headphones (a 2.5mm set with a 3.5mm adaptor) into the head so i could use the headphones to practice quietly, it was then i noticed that only sound was coming out of the left side....is this normal? all help appreciated, thanks.

is your head a stereo head? and does it have a headphone jack? if not, where did you plug in your headphones? if it isn't stereo, or doesn't have a headphone jack you'll only get one side.

First I hope that is a SS head and not a tube head. Second still not a good idea.
But yes the headphone thing is normal as stereo headphones will only be power to one side (sleeve and tip of jack, no connection the the ring in the middle).

i cant tell if its a stereo head, its the XS400H.

and i plugged the headphones in the spot where the cabinet was plugged in.

that's what i thought, but its not a good idea to do that, so don't do it anymore.
and you SHOULD only be getting one side with stereo headphones if you're plugged into a speaker output jack.

ahh alright, no more pluggin in headphones, just the cabinet.

may i ask though, why is it bad to plug the headphones in the spot for the cab?

because headphones are made to handle 1-5 watts maximum and your amp puts out 400!

The headphones can not provide a proper load for the amp's output devices, there is also a fire danger you are creating by doing this. They are cupped tightly to your ears.
