As for me, I'm tired of hearing root note bassists in all of my favorite bands. The guitar sounds cool, drums sound cool, vocals are great, bass might as well not even be there. Can't even hear it most of the time. I don't like that. That's not what I like to hear and not what I like to play.
^I agree. Hammering the root note repeatedly rarely sounds good. Why would the guitar be the only instrument to establish the flavor of the chords and progression?
I always thought is was coolest when each person could bob btw the melody in/out like any decent jazz trio/quad/whatever. Bass, drum, guitar, sax, trumpet, singer..........etc.
Movement together. That is a key part of a band.
When you can all combine all of these into a nice coherent song, man.......that is nirvana. It happens........when it does......ah.......that's life.
It can go either way also, let each shine etc.........then fall back in. Sometimes this can happen with a single instrument. I think bass is well suited for that role. Pizza crust 3-4 days old makes a decent pick.
