I have a paper written by Dr Kasha about fan bracing for the double bass. PM me, and I can email you, or anyone else, a PDF version.
do a search with the words Kasha bass bar for the double bass- or "how to make a KB for a DB" Just put any word with Kasha that interest you -- inventors, etc. I did this once and got more than I could read, or could stand to read - can't remember.
I think that when Arnold used the word "wolf" that he hit on a most important consideration when thinking about installing a kasha- IMHO

I guess the patent is the first place to start Link Removed but that won't have any anecdotal - interesting - stuff.
Thanks again Matthew, Arnold and all. I just removed the intergral bar to make room for a new conventional bar. Your recommendations helped me to decide to do the best thing-I'm sure.

Does anyone have experience/information with the Zaret bass bars? Do they actually do anything??

When I made my first instrument, a viola, I spent a good deal of time on line and on the phone with Mr. Zaret...very personable and persuasive man. I build the Zaret bar exactly as he told me. The result was that viola has a pretty small tone, nothing to be proud of at all, though it is a pleasant sound.
After building 14 more instruments (including only one bass, so far) I am convinced that the Zaret bar was simply a mistake. As I still have that viola (though it belongs to my son, now) I intend to open it up, remove the thick block of wood (Zaret bar) that it now has, and install a conventional bar (though probably still fairly high, and fairly narrow).
He has changed his design a number of times, and I still think it is some wrong-headed thinking.
It may help filter out some frequencies one doesn't like, but I do not think it will ever result in MORE sound.

Thanks...I haven't seen it since the owner took possession--it lives in Illinois, now, I think...last I heard, it is still being played regularly. Wish I could hear it again, sometime.
