Bass Big Muff Pi 2

The prior Bass big muffs have not been that popular, I think the real contest here is this new bass big muff 2 vs the green Russian reissue
For me, the Green Russian (GRM) reissue had more bass, but also a little more subtlety, if you like that. That is, you could pull back the saturation and get it to sound more like an overdrive.
The MP2 has more mids, but I'm not noticing any low end loss until you go well past noon on the tone knob. I think there's more variance in tone options on that knob than the GRM. The Saturation has a baseline of "it's definitely a fuzz" when it's turned fully down, so there's less subtlety there.

For what it's worth, I play a Stingray Special 5HH and I like the BMP2. If the Bass version is just the BMP2 with some nice additions, I'd buy it. But since I already picked up the red one...

I have the EHX Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff, which I like about the most I've ever liked a Muff of any kind (I'm more of a straight up distortion, or overdrive kind of guy).

I think the crossover function of the Deluxe Bass Big Muff is a really great feature, that make the blend control way more useful (I wish the Sovtek had that), but that sweepable mid control on Sovtek completely transforms the pedal into something much more usable, versatile - admittedly, the way I have it set, it probably sounds more like a massive, super-powerful RAT, rather than a Muff.

I've just always struggled to get any kind of distorted tone from my, or any StingRay that I truly love - subtle just isn't possible; it's full-bore face melting banshee scream (usually sounds really damn good in most of the contexts I use it, but in order to get it closer to where I'd really like it requires a ton of subtractive EQ across the mid-range, and some low pass filtering).

I don't like Muff style fuzzes on bass, and this is not exception.

Sound indistinctive and muddy to my ears.

Out of EHX's fuzz offerings I'd personally prefer the Lizzard King for bass.

This one does look awesome though, and I do love Muffs for guitar.

For what it is great product demo too.

Just not for me.

I have the red guitar version so it will be fun to compare it against the green bass version when it finally ships. For whatever reason I had not thought to play bass through the red one yet so I did that last weekend. It is serious about the midrange, so here's hoping the bass edition is properly tweaked for our pleasure.

Got mine today, and though the bass boost does add more low end over the red Muff 2, it’s still very midrangey, and doesn’t have as much low end as a Green Russian.

I was also very surprised that the jacks aren’t the same Neutrik style as all the other nano Muff variants, they’re a much cheaper standard jack and they stick out the sides much farther, which would be annoying on a tight pedalboard.

I got mine a few days ago, and so far I love it! I've never owned a muff, but my impression was that they were indistinct and although they sound huge, they might get lost in the mix. So far (in my practice room) this one sounds tight and punchy, while still having enough low end for me. I'm not doing doom, so maybe I don't need as much low end as some people, but it seems great. I'll report back after I try it with the funk band.

I'm finally giving multiple drive pedals a real try: Bass Big Muff 2 -> JAM LucyDreamer -> JHS Morningstar Clean.
After messing around, arranged them from most gain to least, it seems to have the most variety of usable tones.

Those sticky-outy jacks are pissing me off though. I was wondering if I could just cut off a few mm so it doesn't stick out so much. Would the plug still click in well if I do that?

I have the original green Russian muff. I bought the red muff 2 with similar sized housing. I have no bass muffs. Just dial them in with a parallel channel blender. I’ll probably get bass muffs at some point, maybe.

I got my muff 1 in the early 90s. I got the first issue muff2 to look cool on my guitar board. Bass distortion comes from source audio for me.

I wonder which specific Green Russian version (if any) this is based on. The Bubble Font is my favorite because it has more upper mid content compared to the Tall Font/Civil War versions, which I found TOO bassy and muddy. The SUF Green Russian is the best clone I've ever played. Either way this sounds really good and the price is right.

Just too bad about the extra couple of millimeters on those jacks, though 🤦

This is based on an entirely different Muff design (previously unreleased until the recent JHS/EHX Big Muff 2 collaboration) that was recently "rediscovered" by the guy from JHS pedals when he was doing an interview with one of the original EHX engineers. Apparently EHX had multiple different engineers working on similar projects independently and ended up choosing a different one which became the foundations of the Muffs we know.

I ordered one, it's bound to be delivered today or tomorrow.
Already have a Green Russian reissue to compare it to, as well as the regular BBM.
This one might make it to the board, replacing the Joyo Double Thruster perhaps.
We'll see.😊

Ah, it was delivered yesterday.

I have to say, it sounds like a Muff, but it's gain character is somewhere inbetween the Green Russian and Op-amp, logically, since it's built around dual op-amps.
The blend-knob definitely is a step up from the toggle switch on the original.
It doesn't sound like 2 different signals next to eachother like with the original BBM, but more homogenous.

The tone knob below noon is absolutely useless though, as it has quite a dark sound in itself, and the bass boost switch, nice idea, but a bit redundant in my opinion, perhaps it's more useful for guitarists
Still, it has a few sweet spots, and works pretty well with a mild drive in front of it.
Real estate wise, it's smaller than the original BBM, and overall, it's tonal character has more mids than other BM pedals, something it shares with the Op-amp muff with the tone deactivated.

Using the blend-knob to carefully mix clean and fuzz, many outcomes are possible, and even convincing mild OD sounds are possible when playing around with the sustain and blend knobs.
With the blend fully clockwise, the sustain and tone around 3 o' clock, it does sound like my Green Russian reissue, but with a little more mids/definition.

I have some mixed feelings, but am mostly positive, so, I'd say, I'd give it a 7,5 out of 10 points.
