Bass Build #1

i think it will become rather difficult to do so, because the glueing and clamping will be harder with a shaped headstock. Also, maybe even more important, your neck and headstock have to blend into each other, which is a lot easier to accomplish when it is one piece of wood (after glueing the headstock on the neck)

thanks for the advice robert.

i have a piece set aside that i was going to use as the head. my new neck pieces are on their way, so i may carve this one out to see how it goes. i'm not going to lose much since the new neck will provide me enough material for a new headstock, OR if it comes out good, i'll do a mock up with the current one and see how it goes.

okay, got the headstock cut and shaped. i'll be using this piece with the new neck. the angle for the scarf joint is good to use. the shape, imagine a combination of a Carl Thompson and a Tobias headstock. i glued a walnut veneer to the front. it's all clamped up now.

i didn't take any pics because i didn't have time, had to get done to watch the Steelers Ravens game.

and what it will look like paired with the cocobola fingerboard.

okay, so the fingerboard didn't glue to the neck. now i'm thinking this is because the FB was smooth finished from where i bought it and it would need to be sanded and scuffed so the glue has something to adhere to. gonna give that a shot next time i get to it. i did however get the body halves glued on too. i'm going to have some glue lines, but i'm not going to loose sleep over that.

i did get the tuners in and the headstock drilled. i got black Gotohs and a Hipshot D-Tuner for it and they look really nice. i just put in the order for the pickup (an EMG HZ 45 soapbar) and strings (DR Long Necks).

question for you all, i strung this bass up last night and after getting the right amount of relief in the neck i now have a dead zone from about the 15th fret to the end of the fingerboard. i am using a single piece, wood bridge for this so i can't really raise and lower saddles.... so do i sand the end of the neck, or do i shim the bridge?
