Bass cab for a drop D pickstyle playing

This may sound like a broken record because I'm going to suggest an 8x10 but the question I have is what amp and bass and what venue/environment are you playing in? What other instruments are you competing with?

I should note that I'm not saying 10s are better for grunge or pick playing but its a good catch all cab you'll unlikely be disappointed in.

My two basses have been tuned DADG for years. SVT810 does a great job, IMHO.

I am currently working on the design for my next bass, tuned CGDA. that 810 still can support that tuning, regardless of what the specs say.

It SOUNDS good doing it, and that's what counts in my books!

This is a good point. You're not really looking for the fundamental when you're tuned that low (in a rock context, IMO), its all about the harmonics. And the grind, which is all in the upper mids. I just can't do a tweeter with OD/pick playing. yuck.

RE; O-drive with Tweeter- me neither!

A little history- I came to a crossroads in my playing; would I go full range with a "studio monitor-like" cab (ala Fearful or Green Boy) and "model" the amp(s) that I wanted to sound like?

...OR...

Would I just bite the bullet, and get one of those amp/cabs that I liked and just go for "loud rock an roll tone"?

Ended up biting the bullet with an SVT 810 cab, and now a Quilter BB800 driving it. Two separate Preamps (Ampeg SCR-DI and Tronographic Rusty Box). All the sounds I WANT in the world now (plus all the pedal board tricks/effects for bass).

Happy now, I am.

What amp do you have? What kinda tone are you going for? When I think grunge, I'm thinking an overdriven sound heavy on the upper mids, is that what you have in mind? I think the speaker size is less relevent compared to design/effiency/tuning/tweeter on any cab.

I use a peavey minimax into a older marshal mb600 4x10 cab with a tweeter and run a couple different distortion pedals each have their own sound. I play in standard (BEADG) and drop a and haven't had any issues with getting a bass tone close to deathcrush ep by mayhem not really grungy but lots of distortion.

I feel a cab won't change your amps tone to become more grungy whether u get a 4x10 8x10 or 2x10 starts with amp for sound your cab is just the delivery. I'd say take your head to a local music store and plug into 4x10 8x10 or 2x10 find what sounds best to you then start the hunt.
