For that price, and especially if you want to go flatwounds, I'd find a used Classic Vibe P bass. (or a new one if someone's got a discount) Can't go wrong with that.

I picked up a MIA peavey fury (p) and put flatwounds on it. Sounds really decent for the money I have into it. Should work well for what you're trying to do.

Still looking but have an email sent to Kurt at Rondo. In the meantime I was wondering if anyone has ever played or owned these Squire Affinitys? How do they line up with Kurt's SX Jazz?

The Squier Affinity is the entry level bass they offer. You gotta go play some as the QC can be hit or miss.
I have owned (and gave away) an SX bass from Rondo in the past. I did not care for the neck feel, but quality wise, its comparable to/slightly better than the Affinity.IMO

Thumpy and mellow... I would think that your old Hofner would fit the bill perfectly. Plus it only weighs about 6 pounds. Did you get rid of yours?

I did funky the intonation was too finicky for me!
