Bass Chorus vs Chorus vs Phaser - What's your choice for modulation?

I voted MXR Phase 90, why just one, and other. Nice poll setup OP!

If just one I would go with the flanger. The Boss BF-3 also has a "chopper" mode that gives a hard tremolo, and plenty of jet "woooosh" with the flanger if you want it, cut back on regen and it mimics a wet chorus pretty well.

But I also run an original reissue script Phase 90, which kills in spite of a small volume drop. Just sounds great.

For chorus I really dig the Iron Ether Polytope. I defeat the modulation and just add detuned voices. I will say I also really like the MXR Analog Chorus, just $99 and cops the 80's vibe really well. Not too wet, not too metallic, a bit on the subtle side, but good. I far preferred it to the MXR Bass Chorus pedal, although in fairness that was just trying them in the music store, not with a band. But the more extreme sound of the Polytope is really cool.

Chorus: EHX Bass Clone (currently use)
Flanger: Boss BF-2 or BF-3 (used the BF-2 in the 80s & 90s)
Both pedals are proof you don't have to drop big coin to get good tone.

My favorite choruses are the JAM bass Waterfall and the old TC SCF. I use the JAM and the Strymon Mobius primarily as the TC requires AC power.

I have settled on the Boss super chorus for mellow stuff. H9 for everything else. I had the analog man chorus for a while too. It is really cool, but there is nothing subtle about it.

I had that pedal, it was amazing sounding until it went haywire and sounded like it was gonna blow up my amp!! The switch wouldnt shut off either so i had to quick turn my volume off and unplug it!! LOL. It was the craziest experience i ever had with gear, like it was possessed and bent on destroying my cab!! I sent it to EH for repair and within a week of getting it back it did the same thing all over again, after that I swore off EH pedals.

I voted other with the Source Audio Orbital Modulator. I have mine set for both chorus and phase, and with the default factory presets it sounds perfect: nice and analog, and the chorus sounds like the CE2-B I had.

Those mid 80's MIJ Ibanezes are seriously amazing pedals. Almost every one of them. I didn't know about the one you wrote about so I checked it out. Man, great sound.

I like subtle chorus, but honestly in a live setting, I find it not so usable.. I prefer the mxr delay with the modulation on for light confusing if needed.

Regarding flanging vs phasing, I prefer the latter. So I have a delay and a phaser instead of chorus/flange. I have the mxr carbon copy bright and the vfe tractor beam v3 and I'm golden. Rock.

This is an expensive choice but if you record your own music, it's well worth it: The Strymon Deco.
It gives me that mix of OD, flange/delay/chorus, and I run everything through it. My analogue drum machine, plug-in synths, guitars, bass.

It's a tape saturator/doubler that works on everything!

Chorus is one of my favorite effects, and I've been through piles of them. My favorite of them all is the Digitech Luxe. Super simple and there's no sacrifice of your tone on any level, no wobble, and no noise.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Line6 M5. It's got something like 70 or 80 different effects in it, including probably every modulation you could ever want. I think it even has a looper in it. It's basically an M9 but with only one "module" instead of the 3 or 4 the M9 has. That way you don't have to choose between chorus OR phaser, you can use both in different songs, plus have access to pretty much every other major type of effect plus some more esoteric ones which are at the very least fun to mess with. Oh, and it costs like $130.

I have a Source Audio Lunar Phaser that I like a lot. A wide variety of modulation effects is possible with what's shipped, plus you can pick from all of their modulation settings for the phaser, flanger, and chorus pedals by using the Neuro app.

Other: Eventide h9. Can do a wide range of modulation. Love the micro pitch shift for chorus and the phaser. Other might be great too but that's what I use live. Moog phaser kills but is huge.

Also, the Digitech Nautila is very nice on bass, and is both flange and chorus. There's a lot goin on with that pedal, probably too much for me.
