Bass Dance Effects Live Pedal

No, nothing is going to be purchased until tomorrow, I am still trying to figure out what to get... I am split now with what everyone here has told me, I really want an LPF but everyone sais that MOOG mf101 is basically useless without the m201, so idk... The only thing I am sure of getting right now is the Boss GT-10B.

I really want good fuzz, good synth, and good LPF.

NEED MORE HALP!

Wish I wasn't stuck in this blizzard so I could walk into your store and talk to you, lol.

I'm flip flopping on everything but the GT-10B right now, because I keep getting mixed reccomendations. The MarkBass seems like the best synth so far. Do you think these two pedals would be enough for a good start? or should I grab the fuzz and lpf too?

Also, do I need to purchase a seperate cable to be able to connect my GT-10B to my pc to load patches?

If you're already set on the GT-10B then I'd simply purchase only that and enjoy weeks of playing with and editing patches. There's a ton of features available, including a variety of very usable fuzz/dirt effects and sounds. For example, you want a Copilot Orbit sound - pair some fuzz with a preamp and EQ, stick a heavy gate after it, and add a blended ringmod. Not exactly the same, but gives you that quirky gated fuzz with VCO type sound. Lots and LOTS of potential. Depending what you really wanted to use the Moog for, usually synthy sounds, then leverage the bass synth effect and assign the cutoff and resonance (and whatever else you want) to the expression pedal. Will it sound exactly like the Moog? Definitely not. But it will still give you a sweepable cutoff filter.

You can always buy more stuff later.

Well, the gt10b is going to have A LOT of the applications you're looking for, but not as many options as having a few of the pedals it has in it's database.

IMO, if you're looking for a certain group of sounds, I'd build the board from THAT mindset first, then add a multifx board after if you need a few extras. So, I'd go with something like this...

Moog mf101 & m201
Ehx Micro Synth
Fuzz pedals - so many out there....personally, I like the swollen pickle, Fulltone OCD, or if you're lookin for something funky, get the zvex mastotron

if these didn't quite do it for you, i'd THEN add the gt10b or the m9/13. I'm a fan of the single pedals vs the multifx boards.

While I am going for a specific, electronica/dance sound, I also need to have ALOT of effects seeing as we play shows for hours without stopping. And the same 8-9 tones would get stale fast I would think.

I dig that, then it seems like you would benefit most from the gt10b.
I'd say buy it, mess around with the presets and see what it has and most importantly what it lacks, and then fill in the gaps:bassist:

The Digitech has a few alright sounds, if you want a satisfying sound you should really shell out the extra bills for the pedal you want.

Although its already been said, the boss OC-2 and Moog MF101 are the most common basis of a livetronica/ dance bass pedalboard. Any distortions/ modulations/ reverbs/ echoes/ etc are just extra flavors. I'd suggest getting the OC-2 and Moog and get a multieffect for your extra flavors down the road when you have the cash. Go used and save a ton!

good! look in the classifieds and buy all of this stuff used- you will save a ton of cash, which will let you buy more AND anything you dont like you can usaully sell for almost the same price most of the time.

For the music you want to play the MF-101 is almost a imperative, it is the main component on dan kurtz board with the ep-2 on filter cutoff and resonance. the mp-201 is sick but def not needed. if you want a different sound but same function of the low pass filter id check out the iron ether xerograph... only you will have to wait a few weeks for it to be built.

you'll also need a good octave. go with the oc-2 by boss. this is also another staple in the live electronic sound. you can use the gt10 b for everything else for right now.

btw i think there are a few gt10b's floating around the classified as I type this. scour these classifieds a few times a day and youll find what you need in no time for a lot cheaper. feel free to pm me with any questions

Honestly, if you want super whacky and powerful synth tones then maybe the GR-55 is the better choice. Trigger actual synth tones, you get string splits, velocity sensitive blending (with the GT-10B also has), some on-bass switches, and a lot more VCA/VCO synth parameters all of which you can control in real-time. All available in handy presets.

I'm hopeful the GR-55 will satisfy my personal synthy needs more than the GT-10B which while having a ton of features isn't the best for *pure* synth sounds since the synth effect itself is limited.

But I still think the GT-10B would keep you busy for a while, and possibly totally satisfy you if you're more Disco Buscuits (bass with fun effects) and less Pretty Lights (which is often pure synth).

Check out the GT-10B thread. I've posted a basic loop run through a bunch of my Gt-10B synth patches. And I've recently posted those patches, too. It's all done with a GT-10B with a BOSS OC-2 in the effects loop.

GT-10B should cost you $350 shipped used in the US. Often less. GR-55 is currently being offered for $650 shipped some places with a guitar pickup, bass pickup extra. Compare that to around $500 for just a Moog MF-101 and MP-201 which will ONLY give you a resonant low pass filter with LFO and expression. Well, the MP-201 can do more than that, MIDI Clock via tap-tempo, control via MIDI, etc. But I'm just saying, it's a LOT of dough for a pretty narrow feature set.

Since I can't afford to get all of that, and the MP201 I guess I will just have to wait on the Moog LPF, even though I was really excited for it=/

So just the GT-10B and the Fuzz should be a good start? Any other reccomendations?

just for reference...there are pictures of Dan Kurtz's pedal board around here somewhere and he uses Moogerfoogers without the MP-201

edit: sorry same thing said above

anyway OP, I am running EP-2 > cutoff of Moog MF-101 > mastotron > OC-2 and it does some great stuff

you are not experienced with pedals yet (neither am I)..when you start playing around you are going to realize there is so much to learn and speculation will only take you so far...try stuff out, buy used, sell, try more stuff out, repeat

I started out with wanting straight synth..I got the Markbass SS...wasn't what I was looking for at all (but was cool)...then I went and bought the three I have now and I'm pretty happy so far but I can also see where I may want to add/change

Something else i just thought of... in my opinion effects that can utilize an expression pedal are invaluable, they usually allow you to gently or aggressively (depending on how you move your foot) change the character of the pedal, but aren’t as noticeable as an on off effect. You can make one setting on one pedal sound 10 different ways- or use it as an integrated part of sound your making

I use them on my source audio multiwave distortion pro to morph between 2 distortions, on my behringer bsy600 to control the cutoff, and an exp pedal with my moog for cutoff, I will be getting another one for the resonance. I also have a wah on my board. Expression pedals are at the core of what I do in my live electronic project.

...and an exp pedal with my moog for cutoff, I will be getting another one for the resonance...

That's why the Moog MP-201 is the real key. It gives you expression control over all 4 of the CV outputs. And also gives you MIDI control over MIDI compatible gear, including providing a common MIDI BPM via tap tempo. It basically can give you master control over a Moog and MIDI gear in one fairly tiny little package. But it requires Moog and MIDI compatible gear to do that. :)

But it certainly beats the pants off a simple expression controller (or two, or three, etc.) since it can use beat synced LFO to control all of that. LFO is where it's at for serious electronica.

Note the GT-10B has LFO capability though the LFO is not nearly as controllable and usable as the Moog products. And you can assign the GT-10B expression to control a ton of things... all simultaneously, if you desire.

I'm in a sort of electronica/drum&bass band, but don't have a ton of cash, and since this band is only one of a lot of projects, I don't feel justified spending a lot of money on the Moog MF-101 - how do you guys feel about the Boss SYB-5 to get some more synthy tones, plus I can control the filters with my expression pedal? I can afford a used one.

I currently have distortion, octave, and delay/modulation in my chain.

Thoughts?

Been fiddling with my GT-10B for about 4 days now, have found some really great tones, and quite alot of usable effects in here. The only thing I am having trouble doing is assigning my CTL1/CTL2 pedals, and the expression pedal, I cannot figure out how to get all of these to do what I want. Sometimes it controls the effects, sometimes it controls a wah, sometimes it controls volume, and sometimes it does nothing, lol. Any help with this?
