Bass DI questions

I’m looking for a stereo bass di so I can run both a clean and dirty signal.
I know there is the bass butler by orange. But it seams like a lot of money for a pedal that will only do one thing. Even thought it’s exactly what I want. Is there an other pedal that does more?
I want to use it as a back up and a fly rig. If I ever need to travel.

Do you mean a DI or a Preamp DI?

The Bass Butler appears to be a preamp DI that does exactly what you want. Not aware of other similar products as it's fairly unique. Perhaps it would be possible to setup some modelers to do what you want.

You could run split your signal and run two preamp DIs.. You could choose two totally different models one optimized for clean and one optimized for OD.

If you mean a regular DI, you could use two DIs or buy an actual stereo DI. Radial makes the JDI Duplex, JDI Stereo, and J48 Stereo. Countryman makes Type 85S and Type 10S.

I generally expect PA companies to provide DIs. This should be specified in your bands' tech rider and advanced to make sure they understand. So whatever gear you put on you pedal board can simply be plugged into whatever DIs are provided.

I thought about running two DIs. I guess i should have been more descriptive. I’m looking for more of a preamp DI. Didn’t think about getting 2 different preamps. Darkglass has the anagram coming out that will run a stereo out put but it’s $1300.
I split my signal run a dry bass rig and a dirty guitar head. So I’m trying to replicate that sound with a preamp.

There are various distortion pedals that use parallel processing. Some include internal crossovers. Not aware of any that provide a stereo out, but I would probably advise to mix your signal down to mono so the audio tech doesn't have to guess about the mix ratio.

I think the EBS MicroBass 3 will do it and meets my criteria for "fly rig".

Looks like it does parallel processing but combines down to mono. There are benefits to mono IMHO. It does offer the option for Pre and Post EQ DI outputs.

In the close but not quite, Tech 21 has the DI 2112 which has two XLR puts with one for “lows” and one for “highs” where the lows are generally cleaner but can saturate and the highs can get pretty aggressive. I have no experience but I have been looking at them as an option.

Not much control over the cleaner section, so you won’t be able to sculpt the EQ to your liking if the stock sound isn’t working for you.

I have a feeling that some kind of "all in one box" solution (like the Bass Butler) will be the safest choice here.

Using two DI boxes with two completely separate signal paths can be unpredictable with regards to phase issues. Extensive EQ/prosessing will cause phase shifts. Blending clean+dirty/processed might sound great... or not. Of course, if the objective here is a sort of "bi-amp" setup you can always filter out the lows from the dirt signal, which will avoid phase issues in the lows, where it usually has the most negative effect on your tone.

I have to stress that I have NOT tested the Bass Butler, so I have no idea how good it is for what you're trying to do.

Another vote for the EBS Microbass 3. It can output in stereo, but you can also use one XLR as a clean (straight through) output and the second XLR to output whatever settings you have set with the knobs, so a combination of the two channels or just the drive channel.

This is what I gleaned. One channel taps into the "clean" side only while the other is pre-master and carrying a combination of the clean / OD. I had one and STILL can't recall using all the functions / options. I do remember the drive channel sounded a whole lot better when configured in serial mode.

DSM Humboldt bass Simplifier/master

Jad Freer Capo (but you only get a dry out fur the clean)

If you are okay with something that splits then combines there are many options.

By far the most flexible I have played is the tech 21 xB Driver.

Lots of other pedals will split and recombine. What I’ve found is most will blend the dry signal with a very flexible drive and EQ, but I also want a crossover OR ability to EQ the dry signal. The xB does it all (but it’s expensive and only has an effects loop post combined signal so it isn’t perfect either. )

Yeah, that's how it works and yeah, it's a feature I'll never use. That and the aux in/headphone stuff, and would never need to play in stereo.
At least the MB3 has less useless (to me) features than most others like this. In fact im quite supposed I use all the other features.

Still undecided about the series/paralell feature. Both sound good to me, but I am using the Series mode more as I like that I can engage it and it doesn't alter my base tone too much.

Several of you seem to be making comments about the Micro Bass 3 that are not supported by the block diagram

At the red circle the signal is combined down to mono. You can switch between clean and drive. The drive can be blended with clean. But there is no stereo signal available at the output of the switch.

At the orange circle you have the option of mono or stereo. Stereo comes from an external stereo effects processor and not from the preamp. You need a TRS adapter cable that is wired for stereo to take advantage of this feature. Could be used for something like stereo reverb or stereo chorus.

The green line shows where the Pre EQ signal comes from. The Pre EQ tap is after the input buffer but before all processing including the gain control. So yes you can route both a clean and processed signals to the two DI outs, but the clean output does not include any of the pedals character. The Pre EQ signal basically come into the pedal and immediately go out the Pre EQ DI. That is still useful, but AFAIK it probably does not meet the OPs expectations.

There might be some pedal options from Tech 21 that'll get you close.

Not sure I follow. I said the 'clean' was like a through, so obviously it won't have anything added to it. It goes out of its own XLR. Thats a clean tone with its own out and what Through means.
The second output will output whatever sound you set up on the pedal.
Although I mentioned stereo I never said it was a stereo pedal, I said it could output stereo. I was just saying that as it's a feature that can be used if needed.

I agree though, if the OP means a clean channel with EQ out and not pure clean then its probably not going to work

I’d consider this for the OP’s application. It has a blended out which would mean the pedal settings determine the clean and dirty mix instead of the person running sound for the house.
