IMO, that depends.

I'm of the camp that believes your amp should be handling your primary EQ needs, and EQ pedals are best used for changing your tone on the fly.

While mids play a role, there are two problems with your question:

1) It's largely dependent on your instrument (the bass, the pickups, the strings, etc.).

2) "Classic Rock Bass" is a VERY broad category. That could literally mean almost anything tone-wise. You'll have to name a specific example (i.e., Cream, Led Zeppelin, etc.) if you want better input from us. :p

+1 We're glad to help if we can, but you have to be a lot more specific. I can tell you right now that if we just look at "classic rock" overall, every possible imaginable EQ setting was used by different artists on different records.

Also, you'll want to read up on what EQ "is" and "does". Once you understand how EQ works, what it's actually doing to your signal, it will become very clear to you whether that function would be useful to you in a pedal.

I love my discontinued Boss PQ-4 parametric.

I pretty much leave it on all the time, though. My GK 700RBII has good voicing/EQing, but with the pedal I can put it AFTER the compressor, POG and first distortion, but BEFORE the chorus, second distortion and reverb/echo.

I recently started using an old dual band graphic EQ intended for a home audio system. It works well and has this honky delay built-in. It gets some pretty cool reverb, and I have to admit I feel cooler when using this thing, lol. Mainly because its huge, its from around 1995 from what I can gather, and I walk up to it and hit a switch to turn it on. I basically have it set to boost my mids even more than I already do.

Its definitely overkill though as it goes from, I think, 32Hz to 64kHz. Definitely waaay more than is needed for bass, I have the lowest 3 and highest 3 sliders all the way off because they don't affect my signal and it is probably getting rid of some noise and all those nice vibrations that only dogs or ricter scales could interpret.

I don't expect you to get the one I have, but just know that any Equalizer will work.

Side note: the EQ I'm using came with RCA inputs, and I converted it for quarter inch inputs, and I'm only using one band of the EQ, I should totally start using the other band too for two different EQ options on top of what the rest of my rig does. :D

I play through my SWR 60 watt combo, and it sounds great. When I add my Boss foot pedal EQ, it sounds fantastic. It just adds more texture. It turns a 2D photo into 3D, or B&W into color, or use your own metaphor. I don't use it all of the time, mainly because I'm lazy, but it adds a thickness to the overall sound. :bassist:
