Bass Foundation Course - Joe Hubbard

This is the impression i got from my research of his lessons. The problem with guys like Joe and Scott are they are a business that wants to make money. I understand that aspect and respect that as well. But these lessons are designed to be as slooooooooow as possible to keep people paying for the monthly service.

as someone who is a beginner I found that sites like Studybass and talking bass.net as well as bassbuzz offer the ability to learn at my own pace and offer so much free content that I would rather spend my money on their pay programs simply because they earned by the value I got from all the free content.

Ironically it was Mark from talkingbass.net who mentioned Joe in one of his videos. I think Joe mastery program would be worth it down the road so I can learn and master musical theory and concepts.

I would love to read more about Joes lessons though if anyone has any thoughts

I have not taken the Foundations course so I can't comment specific to that, however I have taken Joe's 2-yr program and am currently enrolled in his II-V-I program, and the comments quoted above have not been my experience at all with either course. Both the 2-yr program and the II-V-I course required very disciplined and consistent practice to keep up on a weekly basis. There has been no stretching out of content, etc. in my dealings with Joe.

I also receive no spam from Joe, just an occasional email when he posts new free YouTube lessons, or an invitation to purchase when a new product is offered.

The cursed YouTube algorithm rewards "content creators" with longer-duration videos, longer "engagement."

I adore Scott's lesson material as well, but THANK GOD I can watch at 1.75 speed on YouTube.

My situation exactly, and I concur with you. There is enough material in the lessons to keep you busy a very long time. No fluff either, which I greatly appreciate.

I don’t know anything about the foundation course, but the 2-year starts with courses that map out arpeggios for different chord types in different positions across the entire neck. These are followed by many other courses that explore different melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic concepts. All lessons are practiced in every key, and some are extremely challenging. Your fingers, ears, and brain will get a great workout!

Also signed up to the Foundation Course yesterday although I'm a relative newbie and still on the long road to mediocrity. It will certainly be interesting to see how the course evolves over the year.

I have done 3 lessons so far and #4 will come this afternoon. So far I really like Joes teaching. Last night I was practicing to play at church this Sunday and I added some high notes at the end of one of the songs and I thought I would not have done that before starting! So I can say this course has changed my playing after 3 weeks! Very happy so far.

I'm up to lesson 5 (received yesterday) and I'm likewise very happy so far. I wouldn't want to pay full price for it and I still think it is somewhat expensive with 50% off but so far so good. You do need to buy into Joe's methodology and approach which is old-school; no gamification here - just knuckle down and do it.

To address some concerns from earlier posts:
1. The videos are you tube videos and the documents are pdf's. If you can bookmark a web page; you can access these from anywhere on any device without issue. I've saved the videos in a You Tube playlist and downloaded the pdfs. Once I've done this once, I don't have to authenticate again to see previous lessons.

2. There isn't a huge amount of content each week but the point isn't about "how much can be taught in each week" but "how much can a student meaningfully learn each week". I like it that the videos are relatively short but the practice I have to do takes up an hour a day quite easily.

3. Spam emails. For the duration of the offer, it was three or four emails a day which did get grating. These have now stopped (I guess at least until the next offer). My concern about marking them as spam would be that I'd have to trawl through the spam to find the email with the lesson link.

I completed Joe’s mastery course and found it quite challenging. I learned a tremendous amount which helped me improve a lot. I have also purchased many of f his books which are also great. While all Music books tend to cover the same material I find Joe’s content more engaging, challenging, and connected to the big picture of music ( especially if you are a Jazzer). When I get Joe fatigue, I study material from other authors (Janek, Berkley, Friedland, etc.), which I highly encourage as it is all great stuff and presents different perspectives which is helpful. However, I always end up going back to Joe’s material. There is a lot of depth there. I am definitely a fan!

A personal update - I took the plunge and I’ve been taking 1-on-1 (zoom) lessons with Joe for a bit over a year now. He is an excellent teacher (for me). He has a real teaching methodology and if you do the work you WILL keep getting better. I’ve spent most of the year just plugging the holes in my knowledge and skills, and it’s making a big difference. My fretboard knowledge, muting, articulation, tone, and rhythmic feel are much improved. My ear has become so much better through the exercises he assigns. I have not become a speed demon or a slapper tapper virtuoso, but my ability to be a more complete bassist is so much better. I’m finding I can play things I never could before. My progress feels slow but it is steady. After playing and plateauing for so many years, that’s a great thing.

The books and courses are good but having him there to critique my playing is *far* better, although sometimes difficult to hear.

Onward and upward.
