Bass Fuzz

I recently picked up the Acapulco Gold by Earthquaker Devices. Very awesome and simple.

Big Game Everything Alive Nothing Dead (EAND) muff
EXH or Vick Audio Black Russian
Black Art Toneworks Pharaoh Supreme
Jext Telez Dizzy Tone
Malekko B:Assmaster or Diabolik

The important part is, dont give up. There are a TON of fuzzes out there. You may have to try a few to find the one that works best for you. Its different for everyone.

I love my regular ol EHX bass big muff.
That JHS muffeletta looks dope.
Muffs and brassmaster are my my favorite fuzzes on bass. Muffs are very responsive to your playing and the settings on your bass, and brassmasters are just fat ugly beasts.
Look around and find something you like, lots of YouTube demoes of everything under the sun just about

I assume the OP is totally confused by now and staggering like a guy just punched by Mike Tyson...I'd throw in a few more Fuzz boxes names to completely fuzz-knock him out and finish him off. I make sure I only use the acronyms too.

MXR BFD!!!
TFR!!!
EHX BBM!!!

When we'll run out of Fuzz box names, I'll start a "what is the best OD?" thread

Hard to beat the EHX Bass Big Muff Deluxe IMO. I absolutely love mine!!
Not to sound condescending but if you guys like the EHX deluxe bass big Muff, you haven't heard a classic EHX green Russian big Muff. I have both now but I started with the deluxe and thought it was just fine for a while... Until the fateful day I got a green Russian. Everything about Muff fuzz that I could ever dream of was brought to light and it made me realize the deluxe is basically an expensive paper weight.

OP, If you're going with big Muff style fuzz, do yourself a favor and don't get a current production ehx pedal. They have absolutely no hair or ballz when compared to a classic Muff circuit. If you test new ones side by side with an old green tank box one, you will immediately hear all the harmonic content and thunderous depth that is missing from the new productions. It really is clear as day.

That said, the EHX dbbm is a reasonable distortion pedal that has totally different tonal character than original (real) Muffs. It's really not a genuine Muff tone but it is a very capable and reasonably flexible fuzz/distortion in its own way. And it has nice features while being not too pricey. The noise gate is a good thing to have.

Out of curiosity, how often did you use the crossover function? If so, what kind of bass and amp did you use it with?

Can someone help point me in the direction of a killer fuzz pedal? New to the fuzz thing.
When you ask an open question like that you are going to get a hundred different answers for a hundred different pedals.
I only got into fuzz pedals about a year ago. There is a massive curve that you have to work through just in gathering information before you can start making decisions.
These are things you need to take into consideration:
  1. Get your terminology straight. Fuzz, Distortion, and OD are three different families of pedals. Be sure that when you say fuzz you mean fuzz.
  2. Budget. There are good intro level fuzz pedals from Behringer and Joyo for very cheap. Electro-Harmonix invented one of the most popular and copied fuzz pedals in history and their current models are pretty affordable. If you are looking to keep it cheap, these are great places to start. Your quest for fuzz can easily turn into a $200-$300 endeavor.
  3. There are three to four families of fuzz in the world. Dig around for an artist whose fuzz tone you like and work your way back from their. As I said, the Muff line is very popular. The Fuzz Face, Tone Bender, and Superfuzz have their lineages as well.
  4. Get on YouTube. Of course 70% of the pedal demos are for guitar, but there are a lot of demos for bass as well.
  5. Used is a great option. When you decide what you want, look around the TB forums and EBay for sweet deals. People flip pedals like hotcakes around here.
  6. Hold on to your hat; its a wild ride!

I've used it on and off, here and there. It's nice to have a second distortion voice to switch between if you want multiple options in one song, from one pedal. But it doesn't really improve upon the initial distortion circuit, it just shapes it and colors it a bit differently. Granted it's a neat feature but it seems like they were just getting to make the pedal as fun and feature-laden as possible to distract from the fact that it's still not as good for bass as their original design that had no features at all. Just kind of funny to me.

Oh and I used it through my big rig mostly: But also many different practice amps and other people's rigs. I'm totally familiar with its capabilities.

Honestly though, now that I have the green Russian, I'm gonna just sell the deluxe.

Im still waiting for the OP to answer my questions in the 2nd post of this thread. I guess just naming random fuzz pedals is what works.

In that case I say grab a fuzz pedal from Earthbound Audio or Black Arts Toneworks.
