I would do it, but in 1994 the Air Force gave me an honorable medical discharge because my L5 vertebre wasn't lined up correctly. The National guard band would not let me audition because of that, so it's playing for the civilians. Good luck to whomever goes this path, you will enjoy it. There's nothing wrong with blowing off a few rounds on an M16.

I played in a band while in Viet Nam in 1970, Couldn't think of a better way to spend my military stint. And used the GI bill to go back to school after.
BTW never had to shoot my M16 even once.

You were, however, clearly in harm's way...that's more the issue.
