Bass guitar upgrade suggestion

I've been playing bass for around 7 months, and I've been thinking on upgrading to a better one, as the one I have (Gear4Music Harlem 4) is not that good. And also because I travel quite often and having 2 basses would be perfect.
I'm planing on taking the one I have now to were a travel (and keep it there), and getting one better for home.
I like playing specially Metal and Rock, but also Jazz and Funk, so a quite versatile bass would be more adequate.
So, in a budget of ~$550, what bass would you recommend?

I would recommend asking in the "Basses" section rather than the "Humor" section to ensure you get proper advice.

But since you did ask here:

Personally I think Yamaha has the advantage of being well-built and generally underrated, likewise Peavey (though at the time I was shopping the prices seemed to reflect less underrating of the Peavey basses in my market, thus, the Yamaha I bought.) But with $550 to spend you can buy some (not any) Fender and expect it to hold its value if you lean that way.
