I could be really pedantic and say that, by definition, a 'jack' is any panel-mounted connector, of any sex, input or output, be it a 1/4" on your bass, an XLR on the back of a mixer, or the AC outlet on your wall, etc. A 'plug' is a cable-mounted connector generally equipped to properly mate with the one of the afore-mentioned 'jacks' to complete a circuit and provide appropriate signal flow, be it input or output.
But that would be really pedantic...
For the sake of simplicity, I agree that he can. What becomes puzzling is that, nominally, a 1/4" TS to XLR connected to an XLR to 1/4" TS adaptor is functionally the same as a 1/4" TS to 1/4" TS cable. An adaptor could very well be a functional workaround and the OP could be happy to go on to have fun with his newly acquired instrument.OP’s question = can He buy a xlr to 1/4 adaptor so he can use the bass on any amp , not just a mixer?

I always figured jacks were the female connector and plugs the male, regardless of how they're mounted. Cable-mount connectors typically are male, but I have a number of female cable connectors - 1/4" and phone(RCA). I've seen male panel-mounted XLR connectors, but I don't think I've ever seen a male panel mount 1/4" plug...unless you count some of those weird effects boxes from the 60s that you plug directly into the your guitar.

I think the first response that questioned whether English was a first language may have scared them away. They just joined TB to ask this question and now have to figure out how to save face, while adding some depth to the question. For some folks, this is like asking them to build a rocket ship to the moon.

I was simultaneously trying to get my head around XLR/balanced signals and shopping for parts for a project (putting mics in an accordion). I asked the salesperson in a music shop what the three connections are on an XLR. The answer? Earth, neutral and live. Not kidding.
