Bass guitar with XLR connection.

I could be really pedantic and say that, by definition, a 'jack' is any panel-mounted connector, of any sex, input or output, be it a 1/4" on your bass, an XLR on the back of a mixer, or the AC outlet on your wall, etc. A 'plug' is a cable-mounted connector generally equipped to properly mate with the one of the afore-mentioned 'jacks' to complete a circuit and provide appropriate signal flow, be it input or output.

But that would be really pedantic...

I always figured jacks were the female connector and plugs the male, regardless of how they're mounted. Cable-mount connectors typically are male, but I have a number of female cable connectors - 1/4" and phone(RCA). I've seen male panel-mounted XLR connectors, but I don't think I've ever seen a male panel mount 1/4" plug...unless you count some of those weird effects boxes from the 60s that you plug directly into the your guitar.

Answer = yes , yes OP. You can.
For the sake of simplicity, I agree that he can. What becomes puzzling is that, nominally, a 1/4" TS to XLR connected to an XLR to 1/4" TS adaptor is functionally the same as a 1/4" TS to 1/4" TS cable. An adaptor could very well be a functional workaround and the OP could be happy to go on to have fun with his newly acquired instrument.

From there, not all jacks and plugs are created equal and the potential for TRS somewhere in the equation expands the possibilities of what is really going on. For me, the most logical causes are either "bad" 1/4" to 1/4" cable or there is enough difference between the 1/4" plugs on two different cables that one works with the jack on the bass and the other one doesn't.

If it's a panel-mount, it's a jack, IMHO. Exceptions and 'what-if's' don't disprove this...
 
An XLR connector is not inherently low impedance. It's just a type of connector that can be, and has been, used for many different purposes.
In the context the OP was asking, the XLR is low z compared to the 1/4” connection.
Taken out of context, any connections can be made, though there are “typical” configurations and uses.

Certainly, but, until we get some clarification from the OP, we don't really knows what the deal is, here. Lots of conjecture, but no real conclusions, so far.

Absolutely nothing wrong with using correct terminology!
 
At rehearsals I run my bass straight into a mixer using a standard guitar cable (1/4" mono TS (Tip and Screen)) jack to jack. No DI box or XLR converters necessary.

I don't recall seeing a mixer that has only XLR inputs, they usually have XLR for the mic input and 1/4" jack for the line level input. (But this is TalkBass so I suspect someone will come up with one to prove me wrong.)

Lol.

I think the first response that questioned whether English was a first language may have scared them away. They just joined TB to ask this question and now have to figure out how to save face, while adding some depth to the question. For some folks, this is like asking them to build a rocket ship to the moon.

Oh well.

An excuse for an anecdote. I was simultaneously trying to get my head around XLR/balanced signals and shopping for parts for a project (putting mics in an accordion). I asked the salesperson in a music shop what the three connections are on an XLR. The answer? Earth, neutral and live. Not kidding.

He wasn’t wrong but his terminology may have seemed so. Aren’t the connections positive, neutral, and drain?
 
I was in the UK where the earth, neutral, live is standard terminology for mains AC. For XLR you're talking ground, hot and cold, or ground, positive and neutral. The key thing being that for a balanced signal, the signal is inverted on one of the pins.
On the same lunch break, I had a guitar shop owner get quite heated trying to convince me that 1/4" = rubbish mic signal, XLR = good mic signal. I was just asking him for parts. He was very keen to warn me off my doomed plans.
Is it safe to suggest you can put a low impedance balanced signal through a TRS on Talkbass, or will I get burned as a witch? Asking for a friend.
