Bass in a truck bed?

Had to take my truckto practice last night instead of my VW and on our way out after practice I put my bass in the bed and one of the guitar players saw and he looked at me like a had a second head. He's like "you're really putting that in the bed???"

I never thought there was an issue, the bass is in a decent hard case. But it's got me thinking, is this crazy of me? Anyone else do this?

I wouldn't, but unless it's raining, I wouldn't think it matters.

As long as it's not raining and there's nothing in the bed of the truck that could slide around and crush it, I don't see an issue.


I put my leather gig bag in the back of the truck frequently.

Yeah, if it's raining or stupid cold out (gotta love Canada) then I try and squeeze it in the back seat of the cab. Never considered doing it with the bass in a gig bag, that seems a bit too tricky for me. But you've never had any issues?

If you have some sort of rubber bed liner then why not, unless weather. With nothing to keep it sliding around I would rather squeeze it into the cab somehow.

Idunno, other crap in my truck bed bounces around like crazy….. there’s not many paved roads by me though.
strapped down or squeezed between other stuff isn’t a bad idea.

Nah, but I drive like an old man. I never put it back there if it's too hot or cold. And really only do this a couple times a year.


When my old band was all riding together to gigs, we'd pack them in hard cases and make sure the bed was packed so things wouldn't slide.

This doesn't sound too bad if theres no precipitation and you don't drive crazy. I was in a band with a drummer who hauled his kit around in the back of an open pickup WITH NO DRUM CASES! That's nuts.

I bought a drum set for my son for $25 the guy's wife that sold it wouldn't let him play it anywhere but outside.

Not sure what rain would do to a case, but I figure cases are meant to protect instruments. Like others have said... I'd be more worried about it sliding around in the back of the bed.

I’ve done it many times for over 40 years. Honestly, I’ve damaged more interior parts cramming amps and cases into the cab than damage from them riding in the bed.

On rare occasions I used to put mine in the pickup bed.
One might I forgot it, woke up to thunder, ran out and rescued it

I stick my bass, cabs, and my tube head in the back of my truck. I hook a ratchet strap on my cabs and head to keep them from sliding around. But, my bass just chills in its gig bag. It's usually still in tune when I plug it in too.

If it's in a decent harder case and nothing else in the bed that could cause damage, you drive to avoid potholes and bumps aka a lot of bouncing or knocking about you may be ok. Cabs and such have ridden in the bed of my truck before, however never my basses.

It's possible that the tailgate could be defective or not closed properly, resulting in a PA and a brandy new Tele guitar falling out onto the highway at 2 am.

Don't ask how I know this.

Yeah I’ve done it. Not sure why it would be a big deal unless it was raining or something. I do try to keep my basses in the cab when it’s -30 though.

Sure. What's the difference? Basses don't care if it's windy if they're in a case.

I’ve heard of people being at a stop and someone runs off with the case. Never happened to me but I’ve never owned a truck!
