Bass in a Year

Hi All, apologies for lack of updates :( There's that little thing called *work* getting in the way. . . .

I have though been keeping up the practice. The past couple of weeks I've been using a 70's Funk book from the Bass Builders Series as well as doing some transcriptions of Paul McCartney (comments on which to follow . . .)

The practice isn't so much of a problem as I'm focused on doing that. More of a problem is keeping up with the updates - videos tend to be time consuming taking a couple of hours at least to record/edit/upload etc.

The project goes on and there will be a vid update this weekend. :)

Don't believe it. That sort of hype creates mental blocks. If you've never met Jaco in person or actually played with him, then there's no reason to adopt a mental block like that. If you believe that you've got every drop of talent that Jaco had then you free your mind from the shackles of idol worship.

I was in a band with a guitarist who thinks that Dave Matthews hung the moon. Because of that, we NEVER played any Dave Matthews tunes because he simply believed that he could never nail it without screwing it up. Someone else, somewhere else thinks Dave Matthews sucks and Eddie Van Halen is a god. Someone else somewhere else things Eddie Van Halen sucks and...
You see the point?

No player--especially a new student--should EVER take on the burden of idol worshipping hype about another player. Jaco didn't do anything that I can't do. You should believe that too.

This is a little OT but,
first I find this all very exciting since I just picked up the bass again about a year ago, after not touching it for 35 years.
I agree with 99.999percent of this post but "Jaco didn't do anything that I can't do" is just not true. He changed the way people see the bass. I guess it's just not so evident because your hear it so much now and it happened a long time ago, but when it happened people were astonished. He's the reason I picked up the bass and I'd love to play as well as he did, but copying is far different than breaking completely new ground.

I'm ready for the flames.
