My best ideas are already listed here (Mingus was my first thought, and still a favorite). I didn't see "Fretty" in the mix. And I'm deeply disturbed by the lack of puns in this thread... Where's Victor Wooften? Paws Lenchantin?

Most tonewoods would make solid dog names. I like dog names to be 1-2 syllables and easy to shout from across the park if need be. "Alder" certainly fits that bill.
