bass issues

well i just got a new amp with a built in tuner yesterday and one of my basses was way outa tune, i got it so the green light came up, well about 5 mins later i looked up and it was flashing in the red, well i tested it and all 4 strings were out of tune equally. i know when a bass wont keep its tuning it usualy means the strings are wore out which they mite be since it came with the bass from a pawn shop. but since they went out of tune so fast and its a really old bass could there something more serious wrong?

Old tuners can sometimes slip/release tension.

Temp change? Was the bass in a colder room or in your car just before you tuned it? Then it warmed up and expanded and ....?

its been in the same room for weeks now but i had that happen another time

Do you have another tuner to compare? If not, now's a good time for new strings.

i had another tuner a lil cheap one but i cant find it, ill use a friends. It did it friday, saturday and now today so its not going away

I'd take the time to get my tuner if you are really concerned about the problem.

That site is kind of cheesy IMO.

Old strings dont go out of tune..
I change mine when i get a new bass and then leave them on, they sound better every year... Never had tuning issues!

I would suspect a crap tuner, crap tuners, or just a bad neck, or a neck that hasnt had tension on it in a while and needs to get used to it again...

I thought of one more thing...when you wind your string around your tunning peg, do you overlap your string? In other words more than one layer of string wrapped around the tunning peg? :scowl: I played a bass like that and couldn't get the E to stay in tune for love or money. It was just his E string. He cut it too long so he just wrapped it around the peg. Anyway we cut some off and restrung it and it was fixed.
