Just like my black fretless. There are tiny etched serial numbers on the heel of the neck. I haven't been able to date mine but I do know these are the originals, most likely made in Japan mid '80s.
Next q is the horns, are they smooth and tapered or have an enlarged end at the factory straplocks?

In reply to your Q, I believe the horns are smooth and tapered.. recessed strap locks are also installed.

I'm thinking that's the difference between the Korean part supplied Japanese. My Korean on the left only shares the electronics, body and neck. The Japanese on the right shares everything but the body horns. I think the black one is an 83 japanese, the green post 87ish Korean, making yours around the 85ish. I have nothing but the bass and a little research to support this though.

Thanks for the info, yeah these MiJ Tune Basses are pretty cool Basses, I plan to hang on to mine...don't see these basses too often.

View attachment 870547 View attachment 870548 I own a Tune Bass Maniac 5 string in transparent red. A very nice active bass. I believe the one you have depicted here by the original poster is Japanese. I say that because the heal of the fingerboard is angled. The heal of my bass which is Korean shown here on the photos is more square. Brass nut, fast stable neck, ergonomic weight and shape. The Japanese were more expensive, but the differences to the Korean models were very minimal. These are high quality basses and fairly rare. I bought mine as a foray into the 5 string world, which never really panned out. Nice as it is, I really never play the Tune bass at all. I do not need 5 strings. I have returned to my eternally familiar world of 4 string Fenders.

I own 2 bassmaniac basses. They were both purchased in the 80’s at Manny’s in NYC. Both of my Tunes are Japanese as I bought them before they busted up the company. The necks on both the Fretless and the Fretted basses have a angled neck at the body joint. The serial numbers will be stamped on the neck heel right before interning the body. Of course those # s have worn off years ago. I absolutely love both of these instruments. The play great and sound beautiful.

Thanks! It looks to me as if it's the same catalogue I got together with my first Maniac (pearl white fretless TB-02PJ/B-A) which I bought used back in 1993. Still one of my favourites...

Hello TB'ers. I know this is an old thread, however I'd like to see if someone can helo.

There is a bass maniac that I may purchase tomorrow. I believe this one is Japanese. Am right?

View attachment 870244 I was at Guitar Center (I know I know) with a band mate today looking to buy a Big Muff pedal for my bass, and ended up falling in love with a bass and putting it on layaway. $20 short!

The bass is a Bass Maniac by Tune. I've it's got a P J pickup setup, plays absolutely wonderfully, has very nice action, and just plays like butter.

I've been doing a lot of looking around, and apparently there are Korean (less valuable) and Japanese (from the 80's, more valuable) versions of these basses, but I have no idea how to distinguish them. Apparently everyone that owns one says they like these basses.

Can anyone tell me about this bass? Japanese or Korean? Good price at $500? Experiences? Thanks everyone! I've done some of my own research on the bass but was trying to find someone more knowledgeable on the subject.

That is most definitely a Bass Maniac Deluxe. It has the extended heel and the recessed strap locks. I had a green swamp ash one in the late 80s/early 90s and it cost me $900 at the time. Great sounding bass! In the control cavity there is a set of 3 dip switches to set your EQ. I wish I still had mine.BTW, It’s most definitely made in Japan. Awesome Bass!!
