I respectfully disagree.
Utilizing your standards, I need no bass at all!
I could simply Korean throat sing the parts and call myself a bass player.
If you want to be a bass player, you need to play bass (for an audience).
If you want an audience, you need a gig.
If you want a gig, you need to play whats on the score.
If you want to play whats written, you need more than one string and eleven frets!It's only logical!!
Really, if you're the Chef, you get to create the recipe. If you're a cook, you have to follow the recipe.
