I have been playing upright bass in a big band, but have had to switch to an electric, because I could not play over 30 some-odd brass players. I have been looking at mics, but cannot afford to pay much. I am 13, and am just looking for a medium grade mic. Any suggestions?

Double Bass Bass Mics

Hi - welcome to TB - I hope someone gives you a good answer but I'm going to sugest a pick up because I use a dedicated bass mic myself - the excellent SDS HCL 100 which cost me in the region of £200 I think and great though it is struggle to cope with feedback in a situation like the one you're describing. This mic fits to the bridge and ponts directly at the top. Many people put mics such as SM58/57s stuffed behind the tailpiece but in the situation you're in I would think they are going to be feedback prone too.
Remember also that the mic will need a pre-amp - the one I have has it's own and gives a line level signal that can be put inot any amp - but standard mics don't and bass amps don't have mic inputs on the whole.
Having said that, most pick-ups benfit from a pre-amp but if you're at all handy with a soldering iron or know someone that is there is a simple design on this site by 'f deck' - if yo find any post by him go to his web site.

you may want to check out the Heil Sound PR40, or the Electro-Voice RE20 (more expensive), as far as mics go.

The K&K Bass Max will work OK without a preamp and might be a good alternative.

I'm not sure a mic is what you need for this application.
I think a pickup would serve you better. Something simple
like a Solo, or Underwood, wold give you much more usable
volume while still sounding like a bass. JMHO
