I thought that was a pop-up foam mute with lock mechanism. That'd be so cool!View attachment 777145 View attachment 777147 I relocated the pickup on my Ernie Ball MM because it interfered with a style of slap I preform down near the bridge. I made a aluminum insert complete with thumb rest to fill the void. Still plenty of tone variables. I'm just on the knob a little more often than before.
I agree 100% with the OP.. I've always wondered the same thing! In my opinion Your better off waiting and saving up for what you really want VS guinea pigging your Bass ! if don't like a Bass then why buy it in the first place ..

I had a vol pot die on my '78 Jazz. Replaced the electronics with a passive vari-tone circuit. Some mods are out of necessity.
Better tuners, bridges, strings, after market pickups.....really to make your bass specific to your wants and needs.
