I agree! I wish my son had a similar interest.....my middle daughter plays flute (VERY well) and my youngest "wanted to play like daddy" but after about 5 minutes of practice she gets bored!
I played in high school and early college and gave up bass for 20+ years before picking it up again about 3 years ago myself...nice to get a decent hobby....
have fun spending some quality time with your son!!!

PS - I heard a comment about "bring it to church".....yeh do...churches always seem to be in need of a bass player...fun...limited time commitment etc.....try it - you might like it!!!
basspraiser, this comment you're referring to about "bringing it to church" actually came from a guy I know from my church who plays bass for the praise and worship band. He was testing to see if I recognized his presence here. And yes, one of my goals is to be able to play my bass for the church band as well.
Welcome. I'm something of a late bloomer, too: played my first note at 26 years old, after years of playing other instruments, and finally found my voice!
I have to say it's been very interesting to hear so many similar stories about people getting started in music early in their lives and having to set it aside for a while - like twenty years! - to raise a family and build a career, only to have the passion re-kindled later in life and realize music is one of the greatest gifts in life that brings people, especially families, closer together.
This is only my second day being an official member of this community, yet I feel so at home here already.

Kudos for taking up a hobby which you and your lad can really bond over! My dad was very supportive of me when I took it up at 15, and while he never followed your path, it did force him to whip out his old sax and we'd occasionally have a jam. Great fun and great memories!!

I gave up the bass in the band thing in my early 20s, yes for family reasons and career. Eventually sold my stuff a piece at a time and more or less picked up acoustic guitar in the meantime.
Only 5 years ago or so got back into bass playing, and am in my third band since then.
So welcome to TB. Even though it may seem that every other member here is a full-time professional bassist with a PHD in Extreme Advanced Jazz, us weekend warriors are well represented.

I took up the bass three years ago at age 50, here's a photo of me and the band I'm in playing the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle last weekend on Memorial Day.
I had a bass when I was 21. My roomate then was a guitar player and I thought I'd be able to play with him. I took a few lessons, but lost interest and traded the bass for a slide projector. Weird! But when I picked it up again, I really took to it. I love the bass now!

I guess my story seems to fit the vibe here. I'm 47. Got my first bass at 17 as a senior in HS. Went through close to a dozen basses and finally settled on 2 in about 1994. Then my basses got put away for a good while as I got married, inherited 3 stepchildren, had 2 more of my own, went to grad school and changed careers at age 38.
Finally, at 45, had a chance to jam with a newfound friend. Now I'm in an original hard-rock band and trying to get a classic rock cover project started with 2 old acquaintences from junior high!!
After all these years, I'm FINALLY in a band (possibly 2) and I'm looking forward to doing some gigging in the near future!!!

Sorry I missed this earlier, maybe this will help...
Any pictures you want to post "full" needs to have a url. That means they are either already on the internet posted somewhere (if so, right click it, select "properties" and cut and paste the "image address url"), or you'll need to create a photobucket acount or similar to upload your own pictures and you'll do basically the same thing with them from there.
Once you have the image address url for your pics, in the body of your post type it out like so...
