Bass nightmares

Hey everyone,

I have been having nightmares about my bass being stolen, crushed to bits, shrunk and whatever else, for years now. Has anybody here ever had this? Or am I just crazy?

It's a 2007 CIJ Fender JB Marcus Miller sig. It's not the most expensive bass in the world, but not exactly cheap either.

This is obviously your subconscious telling you to go buy another bass...or two...or three.
That way you won't be so worried if you lose this one.

Actually...I just made that up, but now I think about it, it does makes some sense.

I have. For me, it's a message. Be more secure — more wise. And learn to live with the idea of loss.

I used to have a lot of bad dreams about gigs. Showing up late. Or forgetting to show. Nothing about equipment though.

It did pass. And I equate it to more security in my life. Stable day job. Steady girlfriend. Enough music gigs to keep me entertained.

I'm no psychologist, but I'd say your body is holding some extra stress. Sometimes it can't be helped, and you just have to live with it, and know it will get better as you grow. I would try to not add to that stress with things you can control. No drugs or excessive alcohol, eat right, get good sleep, take a few moments in the day to meditate and clear your thoughts, try as best you can to separate yourself from negativity (which can unfortunately can come from friends, family, workplace, etc).

but in the end, its just dreams.

The “beloved thing breaking or changing” theme is a common dream element. The broken bass strikes me as signifying feelings of a loss of control over one’s circumstances and a latent fear that one’s stability may be shaken by by encroaching challenges, as well as a nagging guilt over feelings of having not paid proper attention to one’s responsibilities- in essence, the fear that one is presently failing to prevent changes one would have preferred to resist or neglecting to facilitate the changes one would prefer to see.

At least, that’s how it strikes me, knowing nothing about you and your circumstances. In a more classical analysis, the bass would inarguably be a phallic symbol, the destruction probably has something to do with society, and the random slice of quiche in the background of each dream is your mother.

I think both analyses are worth considering.

Just don't get stupid - keep an eye on it at gigs and such, keep your car locked. Life happens. I play with a guy who gigs 59 strat, 61 335 and a PRS. If he can sleep, so should you.

This must be bugging you. You joined 7 years ago and this is the first thing to get you out of the shadows to chat with us????

Relax. Dreams are what happens when the brain doesn't have to do anything about balance, food, work, or other humans. It's as if you took a stuffy executive type and took him to a water park. He'll just look around for a while, but eventually he'll go nuts and have fun. Then he'll spend the next few days analyzing what happened.

So........ yeah...... your brain is picking on you. Hit yourself on the head with a pot and teach it a lesson.

I had one. I had a dream the upper horn broke off of my Rickenbacker before I was leaving on a tour (I've never been on an actual tour). That was my only one, and I only had it once. It was fluffy and normal compared to the rest of my dreams, so it didn't worry me, much. I wouldn't worry if I were you, either.

also not bad! the forum rules prevent me from bottom-lining an interpretation which would be fun and accurate,* but: if you are so inclined = it's an oedipal issue.

OP: i'm sure your father loves/loved you! rock the bass! you've earned it!
