I use the 8 and 12 string models in my Line 6 Variax quite a bit. I've gotten used to the very natural, guitar string like octave up. I've tried a lot of pedals and rack effects.
The closest I've found for clean octave up is the Digitech Mosaic, a 12 string simulator. I use it when I play other basses. (I also use it for guitar which it is designed for.)
Octave below, I use a cheap Behringer knockoff of a Boss pitchshifter. It handles my 5 strings just fine, with minimal delay and is clean and natural. The pedal does ocave above well, but sounds, like many octave up pitch shifters, a bit like a Farfisa organ. It is cleaner with less of the out of tune sounding, digital chirpiness some pedals (including other Boss pedals) have.
