Appreciate some feedback here please. I like to leave my basses on their stands at home. Why? I like looking at them and I pick them up more frequently, which means I rehearse more. The question I'm going to ask may be elementary, but bear with me, I originate from a climate (UK) that is less variable than where I live - Maryland. I live that constant "battle" with Mrs. B where I like the air-conditioning super cool, but the good Missus likes it a little warmer. Therefore, we both play the sneaky "I'll adjust it while he/she isn't looking" game. I'm a late 60's temp guy, Wifey is mid-70's. This being said, is this enough variability to mess around with my basses?
While I am firmly in the leave them in their cases camp, mostly for safety reasons, I see no reason why you can't leave them out. Contrary to popular belief, they are not ridiculously sensitive to minor temperature changes. Humidity is a factor, but really as long as you are comfortable occasionally tweaking your truss rod, you won't have any problems.
My instruments...30 or so at any given time, are always out. I'm 60 and have been doing it my whole playing life. Instruments go in a case for transport. I'm in northern WI. Temp and humidity extremes are the norm. I dress my fret ends in the coldest, driest wintertime so I never have to worry about them again.
