bass players you'd rather not know

well theres plenty of guitar/drums/singer/soundguy bashing in this forum, so i thought i'd start some bass. be honest with this. have u ever met a bass player who challenges all logic?

heres mine: the bass player in my school jazz band couldnt read music, feel rythms, or generally play anything adequately. after hearing him play play straight quarter notes swung, the band director stops, stares, and says, "phil, could u pease turn down the suck?"

and he actually looks for the knob on the amp

my only bassist friend is the most depressing guy i've ever met
he takes the "unwanted bassist" cliche to the extreme
such a self-deprecating attitude, it's bringing me down

I once, mentored a beginning bassist....

He challenged all of my logic, because he had been playing longer than me, and yet, he had no groove, no passion.

I mean, even a humble beginner can play some whole notes and quarter notes with groove..but this guy, no timing whatsoever...

So I decided to sit him down and teach him some very basic scales, and told him to do them very slowly....

I was wondering why he sucked, and it turns out, that he has ZERO interdependency between his digits, it was embarrassing, to say the least

oh yea, he broke his hand skateboarding, that was the reason.

My protoge who, when I asked him why he picked up the bass, replied that he likes to jump around like those "punk guys on MTV" and he asks me "Can I do this on stage?" more often than "Am I playing the right note?" at about a ratio of 100-1

Well, I mentor a bass beginner who switched from sax because he didn't like the stuff they had him play in school. I get him and for the first lesson all I teach him is jazz, which I LOVE to play, and he says "This sounds like the stuff I played back in school!"

Needless to say, I went for the funk approach to no avail. He doesn't like that either. How can you be a bass player and NOT like funk? Better yet, how can you NOT like funk at all?!

I think he was forced to play sax, and therefore forced to play jazz, and he despised it because he had to play it and didn't choose it.


But still, I can get a band room of rappers moving with some funk lines. I did it on Thursday night by myself actually. Quite fun to hear the compliments too. =D

I don't know about not knowing them, but I've seen bassists on TV that are probably experts but don't seem to feel anything. Stand tall with the bass strapped under their chin and maybe tap a toe (not even the whole foot). I'd like to see a drummer keep rhythm like that.

Bassists of all calibres, practice your stage presence, people are watching you. Bass face? A good start.

Naw. I just wanted to show him that younger players are just as good, and sometimes even better than older players. He was being ignorant so I had to proof it to him. He wasnt very good, just a punk bass player, whereas I play classical pieces and funk music, as well as a many others.
