bass players you'd rather not know

That's a little accusatory, and completely irrelevant to what I said. Of course there are fantastically interesting and famous jazz bassists who do combine groove and melody, I was referring to those who don't. It's important to hold down the bottom, no doubt, but I personally cannot channel a large variety of emotions through walking bass lines. Give me some bossa, and I'm happy though.

I like all bass players. It's the brotherhood thing I guess.
I'm not crazy about everyones style but that's just an opinion.
I'm sure some think I'm a hack but that's fine.

I haven't met a bassist I didn't get along with. That said, some of them have a self-negation and/or overappretiation of their own playing that I view as their own responses to a deeper inadequacy issue. Most of that comes from things in life that have nothing to do with or any roots in the healthy act of playing bass. I'm not trying to sound like a shrink, I've just had a lot of therapy over the last 15 years and was raised with such inadequacies myself, and have since overcomed those, so for me that kind've revealing behavior is easy to spot.
