bass players you'd rather not know

I just thought it was funny watching 4stringfury's video... I was ernestly expecting something to surprise me. My band has fired 3 bassists for sucking that badly, I was the first they kept. First off, you play with a pick (and thats fine, given your preference for metal I guess you can say) but your timing was horrendous, overall, it was painful to watch.
I'm not exactly Victor Wooten either, but I think you'd best humble yourself to some of the guys on this forum, as more then a few of them can play circles around you all in terms of skill, speed and improv.
I dont say much on this forum, I just read. And some of the people earnestly giving you advise you basically just laugh at. Meanwhile their taking the time to honestly help you out and improve so many aspects of your "playing"

I just think its funny of how your constantly picking fights with people. Some of these guys have musical resume's that you could only dream of, they've been everywhere (collectively) and have experienced pretty much everything that a musican can experience. A lot of these guys have been playing bass for longer then you've been around. Dont you kind of wonder why everybody is sick of arguing with you?
For a snot-nosed kid thats awful at bass, and has NEVER played in a band before or toured, you sure like to argue at what a "good bassist" is and so forth. I know your going to quote this and come back with some snide comment or comeback of some sorts, and go right on ahead. I couldn't care less. But keep in mind that if you really do want to grow as a musician, you should humble yourself and learn from the wealth of knowledge that exists on this forum, rather then try to "fight it" and make yourself look like the epitimy of a dumbass.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that wasn't 4Stringfury on the video. It was meant as a joke.

But the substance of your message is right on. He should listen to the advice of plenty of people here who are being rather kind and restrained in their message to him. You can learn a lot by being open to different perceptions.

Yeah that was a joke. Its definitely not me. LOL. I play primarily finger jog style anyway. I like to feel directly what Im doing.

Im well aware that there are a lot of bass players that can smoke me. I never claimed that I was the best, all I ever said was that I work hard to be good, and as a result of that hard work I am in fact pretty good. A lot of these guys on here are very good, and Id like to see where I ever said that they werent good. I have never bashed any member of this forum on there playing. Although its pretty awesome that people like Graig dont read and follow threads then tell me that Im not too bright, and that Im ignorant. I go into the techniques, and general instruct sections of this forum fairly frequently. I enjoy learning new techniques and new aspects of music theory.

The particular old dude I had that one particular duel with was an old punk bassist, and punk was apparently all he ever played. It started with me introducing myself and asking him about his bass. He takes a look at my Cannibal Corpse T-Shirt and tells me that I listen to talentless and skilless music and that I should go fornicate with my self. That was the first thing he ever said to me and Id never met the dude before. Im fond of dueling so I asked him to put what he knew up against what I knew. I proved to him that metalheads are quite good musicians and that the music I play and listen to is far from talentless. Needless to say that when Im playing funk, metal, and sometimes classical compositions, I have a much bigger arnesal of techniques and styles to use in my improv than that dude had for his improv. I was also a lot more flashy wich people like. The result was a pretty embaressing defeat for him.

From there I was just trying to encourage my fellow bass players to take a little pride in themselves. It is OK to say that you are a good bass player. Good guitarist say they are good guitarist, good violinist say they are good violinists, ect. So you can say "Hi I play bass and Im good at it." and there is nothing wrong with that. Also there is nothing wrong with healthy competition and I love improv so I enjoy dueling.

In regards to starting fights. I havent started any fights, I have participated in 2. 2 arguments out of Im not sure how many posts and replies ( a pretty good amount though) hardly means I have a thing for starting fights. More what has happened is that on 1 occasion I disagreed with someone  and they asked me to explain my claim. They didnt like what I had to say so it got stupid really quick. As a matter of fact I wrote the OP (funcaliscious) of the metal thread (involving me and mutedeity) a personal apology for derailing his thread with bickery.

With the metallica thread all I said was that I hate metallica, and I do hate metallica with a deep burning hatred. Someone asked me to contribute more to the thread, so I obliged to explain my opinion. Again people disagreed with what I had to say, and this started a fight.

I dont have any illwill toward anyone here except mutedeity whom I just simply ignore. I got respect for all of yall, and if I didnt like the people in this community I wouldnt be here. We are bassist and thats a bond we all have. So if I sounded like an egomaniac, Im sorry and it probably wont be the last time, but it wasnt my intention.

FYI I have played in a band before. We didnt tour because it was a Black Metal band and that genre doesnt exactly have a huge following. Especially in rural communities in Nebraska. We did play some private parties (free shows) though and put on some good theatrics for the crowds. It was more about having fun, which we did. I also played the bass track on a single song with a local band called Blue Island Melody, but me and the guitarist had a big fight after recording that track and we dont speak anymore so that didnt last long. Right now Im quite happy not being in a band. It gives me more time to focus on college, girls, and refining my playing.

There's a very fine line between arrogance and confidence. Maybe it's not for you to decide if you're good or not, but the people you play for.

The people I have played for tell me that Im a helluva a good player. This is a pretty consistant compliment I recieve from people that watch me perform and hear me play. So following your logic I must then be a helluva player.

This is how your logic works. I just think that Im good. Not godly or even great. Matter of fact when it comes to being technical Im totally aweful. I play simple stuff with a lot of feel and showmanship. Can I impress a room full of highly prestiguous classically trained musicla critics? NOT IN A MILLION YEARS! I dont strive for that though, I want to please the common everyday listener becuase that is a whole lot more people and those people mean more to me than some snooty technician.

Not that I dont enjoy complex music. For example:I like opera, and classical pieces, I like some Dream Theatre, I worship Victor Wooten, and recently Im really getting into Death. Generally though I mean come on, Im a giant KISS FAN! I rock out to LORDI. I headbang to Slayer and Motorhead. Finesses and technicality is great, but its not my bag. Im a crowd pleaser and I will give you an awesome show, and that is what makes me good IMO and in the opinion of anyone who has seen me do my thing.

No, following my logic, other people think you're a good player, which is great. But I think you should show us rather you having to tell us. If you have a mic, Windows has a built in sound recorder, quality won't be great but it'll give us a rough estimate at the very least.

Yeah thats a good idea. A whole bunch of people are waiting for me to totally suck, and critique every mistake I make, so Im gonna go make a low quality recording and post it up. COME ON MAN IM NOT THAT STUPID. When my buddy gets done doing his end of the synthesiser project. I will post that somewhere. Probably in recordings. Its going to be digital music though, no real bass :-( but you can here what we come up with. Ill even send you a personal link to it when we git r done.

I think you'll find that people around here don't judge you on your recording's quality, but on the quality of what you're recording.

Why do you even care what his playing is like though? I don't think how good or bad he is is even the point. I mean look at the way he conducts himself in here and the quality of what he says to represent himself as a person, can you imagine the music he makes would be any more insightful? Imagine this kid ignored me and claims not to care about what I say but he is all hurt over me telling him that I deserve more respect than to be undermined, condescended and called a moron in a public forum by someone who doesn't even have the humility to concede that someone might know more about something than he does despite the fact they don't feel the need to label themselves in order to validate their opinion, and yet here he is still trying to justify himself over it. Go check out the thread and read the dialogue.

Just in case you missed it the first time

In particular see what he said in post #57 and my comment to him later in post #118 which is apparently what upset him so much. Really I don't particularly want to drag this on any further but I don't believe the way I am continually being dragged in by this individual is something I should have to tolerate. Especially given my patience with him so far. I mean can you possibly imagine that he bears me ill will? Especially when I gave him this advice for nothing, albeit apparently ignored.

Dude, just ignore it, and move on. It's an internet forum - not the end of the world.

I tryo not to post too much as well. I just try to read what's going on and learn from some of the great advice that is offered online here.
I know this thread is in the humor section...BUT maybe it's time this should end. no one is going to convince 4stngfury his thinking and attitude is wrong. My personal opinion is that his thinking is childish and shows lack of depth. Perhaps, it's not even our place to offer such an opinion on his beliefs. Honestly, I don't know for sure.
I do know that life is way too short to waste it on this topic. My thinking is... play the bass, make your music. If people dig it, great, if not, great.
I've known sucky bass players and great ones (I am mediocre). I've known ego jerks and underrated geniuses. In the end, it all evens out.

Ok, I'm done with my sermon.

well theres plenty of guitar/drums/singer/soundguy bashing in this forum, so i thought i'd start some bass. be honest with this. have u ever met a bass player who challenges all logic?

heres mine: the bass player in my school jazz band couldnt read music, feel rythms, or generally play anything adequately. after hearing him play play straight quarter notes swung, the band director stops, stares, and says, "phil, could u pease turn down the suck?"

and he actually looks for the knob on the amp :D

Now there's a band teacher that needs to be fired. :scowl:

I'm sorry, but a teachers job is to support, encourage and educate... not insult. There will be sucky people in school band, heck, we were all that person once, if you go far enough back in time.

Encourage him to practice, help him learn, don't insult him, nothing positive can come from this.

Where do I get this? Link Please.

In regards to mutedietys comments, I didnt read them. We had a dispute a while ago, and he is invisible as far as Im concerned.

so someone you don't agree with you ignore? what benefit do you hope to get from a discussion forum then?

there are -loads- of folks here at talkbass who i don't agree with at all, and probably just as many who think i'm full of it. still we engage each other so that we can -expand our minds-. by putting someone on ignore all you do is hurt yourself.

that's really sad dude.

I think you'll find that people around here don't judge you on your recording's quality, but on the quality of what you're recording.

+1. a simple baseline reading (no pun intended) of your skills so that folks can gauge where you're coming from.

look, 4sf, you love your bass and love to play, and you put a lot of time and effort into learning it. so do most folks around here - and many of em have been doing it nonstop since before you were born. some have been doing it nonstop since before -i- was born.

this forum can be a great benefit to folks who are willing to listen with open ears and open mind. it'll be a waste of time without em though.
