Bass recording - what's your chain??

I record two signals and blend as needed...

1) Musicman Stingray5 or Fender Japanese Jazz Fretless > Sansamp RBI > Echo Gina > Nuendo

*Line out a clean signal from the RBI to an SVT-CL + 610-HLF (with or without pedal train)*

2) EV RE-20 > Joe Meek 1Q > Echo Gina > Nuendo

Dudes.....

So much talk of the clean sound, reamping, mixing the clean and effected sound and so much expensive basses... I'm sorta starting to fear I'm too ragged to be here.:scowl:

I use same things as with guitar, or then just the preamp of my tracker (mr8hd)

I'll post clips,PM the bashing so the thread keeps on track.:hiding:

Schecter Scorpion-->mesa V-twin--tracker.
Post EQ and compression.

Fernandes jazzbass, modded.--->Vox Tonelab-->tracker.

Same chain just added a LOT of overdrive.

Same chain, some 3-5 tracks of plain BASS.

..."onanistic" said someone.:D

I've used three basses for recording: Fender Jazz, Fender Precision, DiPinto Belvedere semi-hollow. For my most serious project, I used this chain:

Bass -> Aphex Punch Factory compressor -> signal from Aphex DI into board -> line signal to effects pedals (only one used was Boss overdrive) -> G-K 700RB-II head -> G-K Neo 112 cab -> dynamic mic -> board.

The DI signal was kept clean, but I used lots of "boost" on the G-K head and occasionally used the overdrive on that signal for a dirtier sound. The treble was cut and bass boosted on the head, so the mic'd tone was deep and heavy. These were blended. I think the clean signal was emphasized on most tracks.

I use a combination of Avalon 737sp or API3124 or Millennia STT-1 or Focusrite Red8. For EQ i mostly use the one on the Millennia (even if not using the preamp). If I want a fast comp I use a DBX160XT. If I want a slower comp I use the one on the Avalon or Millennia. To use the Focusrite I use a Countryman DI. When I record a cab it's ussually an Ampeg B-15R for the dirty sound.

Tracking with comp on can be tricky--you can back yourself into a corner if you're not careful.
Anyhow, my home studio chain is Bass(most often my Glaub with Duncan pickups) Radial JDI, Summit Tube Mic pre, Summit Tube Limiter, with the limiter barely touching it--hardly any gain reduction, just enough to catch any unruly peaks if I'm playing crappy that day:). Plus the Summit just sounds great, even with no gain reduction on. I leave the heavy-lifting compression duties for after the bass is tracked, usually using an LA2A, but these days I'm getting GREAT results with plugins(Waves SSL, URS Strip Pro--kicks ass!). On some retro basses like my Jerry Jones, I may use an Xotic Tri-Logic bass pre to boost some low lows (it's a great, totally transparent, true-bypass preamp). My cables are all Zaolla--highly recommended.
At other studios I use what they prefer, but always carry the JDI and the Tri-Logic.
But, coming soon, and I'm totally STOKED to try it, is a REDDI . . . ..

My current recording setup is generally a Countryman Type 85 DI right off my instrument as a safety track that can be reamped if necessary, followed by one of my bass preamps (Trace Elliot V-Type or SWR Interstellar Overdrive, both set exactly as I would use them live), or my JoeMeek VC1Qcs channel strip. The output of the preamp goes directly into the recording system on a separate channel.

Warwick - Signal Splitter - A to DI (dry) - B to eden head - line out to board.

I like the ampeg IK multimedia software specifically for some decent cab emulation if I need some more depth. You can always add effects later, you cannot take them away.

I've also had good results with an SM57 on the tweeter. Gives you the option to dial in a brighter tone when needed or some fine EQ work. I've also experimented with running the line out to a mesa boogie cab with good results.

changes a lot, as the song dictates the sound, but last time it was

Lakland 55-02 (w/ SD´s) --- Klark Teknik DI --- SansAmp --- amp w/ Rane DC24 --- cab (Hartke 4.5XL) --- Sennheiser 421 and AT 4047 --- focusrite ISA 430 and Amek G pre --- PT HD interface.

in the mix I used the DI for clear lows (filtering the hi-end off in PT) and the 421 for (SA)crunchy mids and easy highs. Didn´t use the 4047 at all, beacause it didn´t fit the song (though it sounded good)...

Either direct. Warwick Corvette $$ > Mbox interface > macbook/iMac

or the live chain minus the cabs.

Warwick Corvette $$ > Boss DD3 delay > Ampeg SVP-BSP pre> MBox interface > Macbook/iMac

My preamp is a split channel pre. I have a clean and dirty channel each with their own FX Loop. I run my FX through the dirty channel, so all my crazy stuff still has my clean bass sound blended in.

One of my basses -> DI -> Quad Eight MM310B channel -> Drawber 1968ME -> Interface

My Q8 has one of the sickest EQ's on it. The 50Hz low shelf on that thing is JESUS. And driving it a little is great for pick/aggressive tracks...a little bit of extra harmonic content.
